Carb timing, How to do it properly? Opinions wanted.
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:21:19 AM »
With the goal of making the 185 lbs division I started a diet about 4 weeks ago. Before I started I was 220-223 lbs and after 4 weeks I am 207-209 lbs. It is impossible to wrestle and spar on a no carb diet so atkins/low carb was out of the question. What I did differently this time around was the timing of my carb consumption. I made sure to limit carb intake after 4:00 pm or after my last training session. Before 4:00 pm or my last training session the ratio for carbs to protien is about 65-35. After 4:00 or my last training session the ratio is 95-5 for protien to carbs. So on a typical day I will have 4 meals with a 65-35 protien to carb ratio and then my last two meals are at a 95-5 protien to carb ratio. I can honestly say in the 4 weeks I have been dieting like this I have got leaner and lost weight faster than ever before even with my ratio of protien to carbs at about 50/50. Has anyone out there ever tried a diet similar to this? If so what were your results like?

thanks for your time and responses.

I would take a simple carb like maltodextrin 30-50mg 1-2 hours prior to wrestling. You'll at least put some glycogen back into the muscles giving you some energy for wrestling.
Has to be a simple card though.

sounds like what you are doing is working just fine, correct?  :) dont change it.

if being so meticulous about your food intake and ratios helps you stay on a diet, then so be it. however its totally unnecessary and doesn't provide any benefits beyond eating normally and just making sure to have adequate protein and caloric restriction.

What would you use as the simple carb source?

Have you tried caffeine or Ephedrine for energy? when i do low carb, i use caffeine pills or ephedrine to get energy. I honestly cant say that i FEEL STRONGER or MORE ENERGIZED after having carb. Try 90-10 P/C ratio, and take 200-400mg of caffeine an hour before your sparrs... give it a shot
