Disgruntled Democrats join the Tea Party
By Shannon Travis, CNN Political Producer
April 2, 2010

Grand Junction, Colorado (CNN) -- They are not typical Tea Party activists: A woman who voted for President Obama and believes he's a "phenomenal speaker." Another who said she was a "knee-jerk, bleeding heart liberal."

These two women are not alone.

Some Americans who say they have been sympathetic to Democratic causes in the past -- some even voted for Democratic candidates -- are angry with President Obama and his party. They say they are now supporting the Tea Party -- a movement that champions less government, lower taxes and the defeat of Democrats even though it's not formally aligned with the Republican Party.

To be sure, the number of Democrats in the Tea Party movement is small. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows that while 96 percent of Tea Party activists identify themselves as either Republican or Independent, only 4 percent say they are Democrats.

Some of these disgruntled voters are taking part in the current Tea Party Express tour. The tour began in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's hometown of Searchlight, Nevada, on March 28 and is making 44 stops across the nation. It ends in Washington on tax day -- April 15.

Ann Ducket attended the Tea Party rally in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Wednesday.

A lawyer and lifelong Democrat, Ducket made her political leanings clear: She said she was a campus community organizer for Democratic Sen. George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, voted for Jimmy Carter and Al Gore, and previously ran for elective office in Colorado as a Democrat.

"I was a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and I probably did inhale in college," Ducket said.

Ducket, who is now an independent and did not vote for Obama, said the president has "carried things to an extreme."

"I think we've gone too far on the side of government doing too much," Ducket said. "The Democratic Party is wanting to take care of everyone, instead of helping everybody stand on their own two feet."

Roxanne Lewis expressed a similar point of view. A small business owner in Grand Junction, Lewis described herself as a lifelong Democrat and called the president a "phenomenal speaker." She voted for him because she "believed in what he was saying: change."

But, Lewis added, "I should've listened a lot closer when he talked about 'spreading the wealth.' "

Asked how she feels about having voted for the president, Lewis said "I feel lied to, cheated and raped."

Lewis criticized the taxpayer-funded bailouts of financial institutions, which began under former President George W. Bush, and the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler.

"These are not the Democrats that I have been brought up with," Lewis said. However, she said she will continue to be a Democrat.

"We hear from folks, probably at every rally, who say, 'I was a Democrat,' " Levi Russell, communications director for the Tea Party express tour, said.

"Having more Democrats join the movement shows that it is more representative of the American people than the antics of the Obama, [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, Reid leadership," Russell said.
The Democratic National Committee declined to comment.

David Saucedo is a rapper and community activist who frequently appears at Tea Party rallies. Using the stage name "Polatik," he performs rap songs that slam President Obama and the Democrats.
Though he eventually voted for GOP Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, he said he was initially impressed with the president.

Now Saucedo has turned into an Obama critic. "A lot of the things he says sound good, until you look at the consequences of what they will do on the long term."
Saucedo also said that most of his family voted for the president but now support the Tea Party. He said his sister in law's views sum up the family sentiment.
"She regrets voting for Barack Obama," he said.

So it continues in the US revolution--more than 30 governors of the US received letters last week stating that they must resign within 3 days or be removed. This came from an American "extremist group" according to the FBI.

As I have told you, Sarah Palin and the Tea party are creating triggers for programmed American "terrorists" to activate and attack governmental institutions and officers. This will continue and intensify over the next few months.

Just this past week alone, 2 separate groups have threatened police officers and those in high political office. Seems as if Obama signals the destruction of the US as we knew it. Most of it is gone already.

Be careful this Spring and Summer in crowded city locations, malls, public transport and office buildings. All of these may be targets, no matter where you live.

Instead of knocking on every door in their town, convincing people to vote against Obama and dem candidates in fall, they're creating threats.

What these groups don't realize is that obama probably welcomes them getting all feisty like this.  It gives him sympathy vote from scared people.  It gives him power to crack heads, raid militias, spy on citizen and maybe squash some gun rights.

It's better to work within the confines of the law, and just vote his ass out.  Making threats just lets more of his lib agenda get thru.

A few months ago Thom Hartmann told viewers that he felt progressives had more in common with the tea party than with democrats.  He then encoraged his listeners to attend tea party events and meetings.  It also reminds me of what was happening during the election.  Thom and Ed Schultz would have Ron Paul on their show often.  Ron Paul was noted as being a favorite by listeners.  Thom also seemed to love to talk with him.  Here's left leaning shows with an audience and hosts that liked Ron Paul.

I think it could be a good thing to see the Tea Party become a factor.  The only thing that makes me wanna puke are the people that keep trying to co-opt that movement and we've seen plenty of that going on.  Palin, Hannity, Glenn Beck, the republican party etc...

Yes, of course, and those "progressives" are walking right alongside people holding up signs calling for the "spirit of the 50s".

Full of shit doesn't even begin to describe it.

At one time I was in favor of the tea pary movement. The only reason anyone would want there to be more money stolen from workers and given to the lazy is pure jealousy. But this movement is now being run by special interests. If Sarah Palin is the leader I don't want anything to do with it.

I think the mood in the country is similar to 1994.  The problem is there is no coherent agenda like the Contract With America and no clear leader like Newt back in 94.

If you lived in the highest taxed county in the nation, and it was two minutes from the gym and 10 of your gym buddies were going would you re-consider?

I voted for Democrats Obama and Charlie Brown (congressional) in the last election, largely in protest against the GOP candidates.

I was a tea party guy long before it was cool.

I favor a flat tax.

On top of the fact that I dont like standing there listening to speeches.I wouldnt go to a tea party because Id know there would be libs there trying to antagonise me into a fight.Unlike many other tea party people I wouldnt stand by while some fool got in my face and yelled at me.There would be a fight and why would I put myself into that position.

LOL @ Hugo... good point.... I'd attend a tea party in a minute if they had one in my town as well.

BILLY, I'm not sure how effective you are being.  I mean, your money will make for nice strippers tips and hawaii getaways fro repub bigwigs... but it is your own words, knocking on doors and talking to people about your beliefs, that makes a difference.

I mean, you can send your money to repubs so they can run ads bashing maddow, and that'll feel good.  But you should get involved like 333386.

Let me tell you this.If some jerkoff came to my door and knocked at it and started to tell me about some political bullshit,Id get my baseball bat and knock them right the fuck off my door step. There is no soliciting in my neighborhood.Sitting in a crowd, listening to a bunch of malcontents is not my idea of action.Sitting there while some homo lib tries to incite me into a fight so the left wing scum bag lib media like that filthy dyke Maddow and her followers, that are 100% gay as well, can film it to show on her show so the 500,000 other fags can lament the racism,is not my idea of doing something.

So,if thats your idea of getting involved ,thats fine. Its not mine. Now,if you want me to go spit on a race baiting piece of shit like John Lewis,Id be more then happy to do that.If you would like me to jump in Chris Mathews face and dare him to call me a tea bagger,Id do that.If you find another Tim McVeigh Id be willing to help fund his efforts or fund a guy like the guy who blasted Tiller,Id help him out.But sitting or standing in a crowd, sorry,I let idiots like Cindi Sheehan do that.
