4 teens charged with hate crimes after bat incident in Monsey

Ramapo police said officers went to Neil Road on a report of people fighting in the street at 10:39 p.m.
Police said that when officers arrived, numerous witnesses reported that four young people were threatening people from the neighborhood with sticks and yelling threats.
Members of Chaverim, which has been described as a Monsey neighborhood assistance group, held two of the teens until police arrived.

Ramapo police said officers found the other two.
Monsey has a large Orthodox Jewish population. Saturday was the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
One of those arrested had an aluminum baseball bat, police said.

Those arrested:
• Kyle Silceira, 16, of Spring Valley. He was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime, second-degree menacing as a hate crime, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (the bat), and disorderly conduct.
• Anthony Soto, 18, and Denise Lopez, 17, both of Spring Valley. Each was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime and disorderly conduct. Silceira, Soto and Lopez were to be arraigned Sunday.
• A fourth boy, who is 15, was not identified by police. He was charged as a juvenile delinquent and released to his parents. He will appear in Family Court this month.
Police said no injuries were reported and that no property was damaged.
