DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Bodybuilding has been suspended from the World Games after a rash of doping violations.

The decision Wednesday comes after four bodybuilders tested positive for banned substances last year at the World Games(Kaushong,Taiwan), which features more than 30 non-Olympic sports including surfing, orienteering and squash.

World Games organizers say 17 of their total 25 doping cases since 1989 involve bodybuilding.

The World Games are staged the year after the summer Olympics. The next site is Cali, Colombia, in 2013.

Sports federations and officials from around the world are meeting in Dubai this week.

This isn't a big surprise... I mean regular athletes are getting caught for blood doping, much less bodybuilders... ::)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Games

The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event, meant for sports, or disciplines or events within a sport, that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Some of the sports that were on the program of the World Games eventually made it as Olympic sports (such as triathlon) or have been Olympic sports in the past (like tug of war). Participation in past World Games is included in the evaluation criteria used to select new Olympic sports adopted by the IOC on August 12, 2004. However, with the current position of the IOC to limit the Olympic Games to 10,500 participants, it is unlikely that many of the World Games sports will be elevated to the Olympic sports.

Some of the sports that are currently held at the World Games are orienteering, body building, powerlifting, finswimming, squash, netball, water skiing, casting, etc. The sports that are included in the World Games are limited by the facilities available in the host city; no new facilities may be constructed for the games. Typically, between 25 and 35 sports are contested at any particular World Games. Sports that have been classified as "invitational" are still played, but no medals are awarded. Even if some sports are official sports of the IWGA, they can be classified as invitational by the hosting city.

Dorian Yates first international contest was the world games. winner was Berry Demay. Matt Mendenhall, Olev Annus,  Celwyn Cottrel (??) and several other high profile amateurs (at the time) placed ahead of him.  he had apparently only been training 18 months

IFBB: Suspended by IWGA (International World Games Association)

http://www.worldgames-iwga.org/vsite/vcontent/content/transnews/0,10869,1044-16941-19728-4769-306994-12500-889-layout183-18091-news-item,00.html

On Monday, the 26th of April, the Annual General Meeting of the IWGA (International World Games Association) confirmed the decision of the Executive Committee to suspend the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB). At their meeting in the context of the SportAccord Convention 2010 in Dubai the representatives of 19 member federations voted to confirm the suspension decided by the Executive Committee (with 9 votes against and no abstentions).

The re-elected IWGA President Ron Froehlich described the vote by the assembly as an important expression of support for the decision of the Executive Committee to suspend the IFBB. The IWGA Executive Committee had unanimously suspended the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness and its athletes from The World Games.

The reason was: four bodybuilders had been tested positive for banned substances under the IWGA Anti-Doping Rules at The 8th World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung. One athlete tested positive twice. All in all, only five athletes tested positive during the 2009 games. Of all 25 cases of doping detected during The World Games since 1989, 17 had to do with bodybuilding (more than 68 percent).

it took place in England, very good contestants that year.

Ben Weider worked his ass off (no homo innuendo) his whole life to get bbing in to the olympics, and one of his crowning achievements was the world games.
The man has been gone less than 2 yrs, and its all falling apart already...

It was Ben and Jow W. that helped turn BB into an actual organized sport along with Bob Hoffman and a few others.
Ben had the ability, smarts and political savy to get BB to go mainstream, and in the olympics.
BUT, he failed to deal with the drug issue, common, in all  pro IFBB contests.
Many of the other Olympic sports have had problems with doping/drugs. The difference is they actually consider it cheating and try to enforce the rules by testing. BB does NOT.

It really is true. For example, in baseball if you juice and get caught the fans say you cheated.
In bodybuilding of you say the pros are not going to juice the fans would feel cheated.hehehe

don't forget the antics of Kai Green.  Bruce Patterson's career ended when it surfaced that he made an underground gay porn tape. Bob Paris' career ended when he announced he was gay.  now i think they're getting bonus points for this behavior.  (not talking about homosexuality, but perverted public acts easily viewed by kids and such)
