Is it true that he never apologized to Stingley?

Jack Tatum dies from heart attack

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Jack Tatum, the All-Pro safety for the Oakland Raiders best known for his hit that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in an NFL preseason game in 1978, has died. He was 61.

Nicknamed "The Assassin," Tatum died of a heart attack Tuesday in Oakland, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks.

On Aug. 12, 1978, Stingley, playing for the New England Patriots, ran head-on into the hard-hitting Tatum on a crossing pattern. The blow severed Stingley's fourth and fifth veterbrae and left the receiver paralyzed.

Tatum said he tried to visit Stingley at an Oakland hospital shortly after the collision but was turned away by Stingley's family members.

Stingley died in 2007.

if he wasn't such a cheap shot head hunter instead of going for the sure tackle, the Immaculate Reception never happens :)

I don't think it's fair to label his legacy as a cheap shot head hunter. The rules for defensive backs were much different back in his playing days. You could pratically rape receivers and really rough them up. There was no 5 yard contact rule. You could strike opponents in the head when tackling, too. I'm sure Joe Greene, Lambert, and Ham did more than their share of head slaps and clotheslines when they made tackles.

The guy belongs in the Hall of Fame. If he was a former Steeler, I'm sure you would've taken pride in his style of play.

Didnt Lott get his finger cut off rather than miss a game? I think he got it stuck in a face mask or something...

I had lunch with Jack in 1999 (maybe 2000).  He came over to my uncle office to sign a fee magazines then we went to the Gold Coast for lunch.  He was nice I guess.  More quiet than I thought.  All I could think about was how bad ass he was and how he didn't like to tackle he liked to knock the other guy down.  What a hit reel

He did have about half of it removed instead of having surgery to fix it.....and it was so he didn't miss a game.  That was a baaaaaad man....loved watching him play.

any of you guys remember Kenny Easley that played for Seattle?  He was a monster too.

what does that have to do with him not going for the sure tackle, causing the most famous play in nfl history?

It was the tip of his finger.  I remember it well.  He could have had surgery and would have missed about two weeks or get the tip amputated and played right away.

Ronnie Lott was a beast.  He was to the secondary what Singletary was to LBs.

Nothing. I'm just disagreeing with you that he was a cheap shot head hunter.

Roy was the today version of Jack Tatum!    Until the league came in making rules.   If these rule were back then Tatum would have been out of some major money!
