I said I understood that situation.  I used it to illustrate how much it sucked being cuffed.

Now, am I okay with 40 million legal hispanic americans being cuffed because "they look like illegals"?

Nope.

Who said they'll be cuffed?  It's not common practice for people to be cuffed while asking for identification.

He feels "violated".

Plus he was probably a smart ass, telling the cop he had no reason to stop him and he has rights and shit like that. ::)

he broke the law, fit the description of a person with a kid who had been kidnapped and was detained until it was determined he wasnt the guy...I really truly dont see the problem here and I would like 240 to tell us all why he felt violated...

He's just going to ramble on about rights.

I really don't see what the roblem is either, if you're not breaking the law, you don't have anything to worry about.

"you would like 240 to tell you..."

lol relax dude, it's just the internet.  I hated being cuffed.  I broke a traffic law (arguably).  Do people now deserve 15 min in cuffs for crossing a double yellow line?

All I know, if Obama was recruiting ACORN to 'check papers' on bearded white guys, we'd have riots.

you werent put in hand cuffs b/c you broke a traffic law brain child...way to spin  ::)

you were hand cuffed b/c you had a gun and matched the discription of a person or a child who had been kidnapped...

I agree if you had been hand cuffed b/c you simply broke a traffic law it would have been excessive but given the circumstances I dont see the problem

so you think that no person who is suspected of a crime should be handcuffed or detained?

hey, believe what you want, I'll believe what I want.

I don't want an America where "show me your papers comrade" is acceptable if a person hasn't broken a law.  I don't want an America where it's up to some high school grad insecure beta male cop to decide if I need 15 min on the curb for a traffic violation.

Spend a few minutes in cuffs in front of your family, see if you feel the same.  It sucked guys.  I know, without experience you woudln't know.

I have been placed in cuffs "for the officers safety" if 240 had a gun,(permit or not) this could be a viable reason to be cuffed.

"I wasn't there and don't know exactly what happened, but your story doesn't pass the smell test.  The four police officers you referenced were shot in the state of Washington by Maurice Clemmons.  That is literally on the other side of the country.

An amber alert would have nothing to do with you, unless you were suspected of abducting a child.
"

beach bum, you were AWOL from the board when this all happened.

There was an amber alert on ft myers beach (i'm in estero, right next door) for a 30-something guy and a boy mine's age and look.  The cops told me they were on their toes due to the shooting, which was big breaking national news.  Hell, they knew how many kids total (9 i think) that the 4 officers had.  You dont think cops on this coast notice major stories like that?

I was stopped because I drove over a double yellow line - it broke so I thought it was okay to turn there.  everyone else does.  Cops said there was no turning there.  Everyone sitll does.  I dunno why they stopped me.  But they checked out my kid up close, they checked my gun, etc.

You konw the law well - and you come at me attacking me on an incident which I described in great detail here on getbig.

I was very understanding after the event - I understand.  But it sucked.  it sucked big time.  You want to doubt me, that's fine beach bum... i'm sure you've never been cuffed in your life, that's fine.  The feeling is something you can't describe til it happens to you.  I wouldn't want to see more legal, innocent americans go thru that shit.

No one is attacking you.  At least I'm not.  I got no beef with you.  I just don't believe your story.

I watched a little bit of the Greta discussion with Newt yesterday.  She said every law has the potential to be abused.  There is nothing stopping crooked cops from abusing the law and profiling now.

But that isn't what happened in your situation.  No, you didn't get pulled over and handcuffed in Florida because some black guy in Washington, on the other end of the country, shot some police officers.  And I seriously doubt they cuffed you because you fit the description of the suspect in a child abduction.  Is it possible?  Sure.  But not something either one of us should lose any sleep over.

I used the cuffed situation - because I dont want to see other americans go thru that if they dont have to.

and the list of scholars and repubs and lifelong conservatives who say this law gives police the ability to break the law... it's not like this is just Obama/ed schultz crying about it.  Tom Tancredo and Bill Kristol don't like this bill... I mean, that's as far-right as you can get lol.

The police already have the ability to approach anyone they suspect may have broken the law.

Because the federal government isn't doing its job to protect the borders, particularly in Arizona, and Arizona has over 400,000 illegals.

that does not make sense.  police already have the power to approach anyone they think broke the law.  being an illegal is breaking the law.  so they already have this power.  right?

Technically.  Which is another reason why the uproar doesn't make any sense.

I think it might also serve as somewhat of a deterrent.

ah gotcha

the real reason for this law?  I think jan brewer wants to be the VP selection in 2012.
she appeals to a lot of ppl with this law.  and obama is getting majorit of hispanic vote, let's be honest.

Possibly.  But I'm not sure this is something the governor initiated?  Even if she did, it is something the majority of the people in her state want and something the majority of the country agrees with.

I don't think the Hispanic vote will decide the 2012 election.  It will likely be decided by the same people who put Obama in office:  independents and crossover Republicans.

that does not make sense.  police already have the power to approach anyone they think broke the law.  being an illegal is breaking the law.  so they already have this power.  right?

I think that's the whole issue. Police must have reasonable suspicion. An illegal alien is illegal simply by being on US soil. But how do you deem if he is illegal? The most prominent way is appearance and that's why those who oppose the law say that it will inadvertently target pretty much everyone (illegal alien or US citizens) who happens to look mexican, hispanic or latino.  I'm 100% for enforcing immigration laws but I can't see how the Arizona law differentiates illegals from citizens just on looks alone. After the uproar Gov. Brewer went on to say that the law does not discriminate and does not involve racial profiling. So how exactly will the law target illegals only?

As for the political damage done, i think a small minority of hispanics will agree with the law (and quite rightly since they are the ones who will get a bad name due to all the illegals), the vast majority of them will disagree (probably the same ones who fly the mexican flag above the US flag or like that propagandist teacher who talked about "occupied Mexico") so I don't think it's gonna change anything.
