How would Benny "the Jet" Urquidez do in MMA
« on: June 04, 2010, 04:55:44 AM »
How would my old friend Benny do in MMA today.  he was one hell of a fighter back in the day.  He would have done great in K-1. He was a super great fighter with a great mindset and unreal skill.  Anyone here train at his Jet Center in Van Nuys?

That guy was/is tough as nails.  Excellent stand up.  Agressive styled fighter.  He would have picked up the ground game quickly.  So he probably would have got his ass kicked.  lol, I think he would have done very well.

He actually accepted the Gracie Challenge back in the day and was supposed to fight Rorion.

What happened next, I have no idea. Benny said he enlisted the help of Gene Lebell and Bill Wallace (Lebell being the grappling legend, and Superfoot who was a collegiate wrestler), and then Rorion started making demands about money etc etc.

To hear Gracie's argument - they did scrap, he took Benny down and submitted him easily.

In truth - who the fuck knows?

I think Benny would have done a fine job in MMA had he been there at the start.

The guy is nothing.  He wouldn't survive the 1st round against Jose Aldo.

agreed, he's tough but in mma cage/ring today he would get trashed like no other that's for damn sure...

but he's better actor than chuck lidell and tito though... they can't perform stuntsl ike this ever.

Depends on his natural groundgame talent
and learning ability.
He would probably be just a mid level MMA fighter
like Cung Lee.
He is a very small guy 5.6 is very short for LW-UFC 155lbs
facing taller guys that cut weight, and gain up to 20lbs at fightnight
while Benny will be way below the 155lb mark.

He had the timing, stamina, technique and toughness
He lacks that athletic explosive randleman body.
For a short standup guy he must limit his kicks a bit
to prevent the TD's.
Which means mostly boxing with t-rex arms.
we would still see some great highlight KO's
Interesting career.
He tells strange stories like Benny participating in a
fight to the death without knowing it. nobody will know if its true.
Its fun to see him in movies
when he acted in Grosse Pointe Blank they let him coreograph
the fight scenes.

In kickboxing the guy would get FUCKING SMOKED in MAX.

About 5 years ago at a party everyone was talking about some badass from California who had just moved to where I live.  Everyone expected me to test this guy so I felt pressured.  I finally meet up with this kid later that night standing in a group.  Someone brings up how I Thai box and this guy proceeds to say he was trained by Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, how he was one of his top students, and if I had ever heard of him.  Honestly at the time I didn't know so I wasn't intimidated.

The party was in the parking lot of an apartment complex and all of the sudden someone comes out with a couple pair of boxing gloves and everyone says we should fight.  I really didn't want to, but I couldn't look like I was scared.  The parking lot was pretty well lit and everyone gathered in a circle.  Basically the guy throws a couple kicks to my stomach and we circle.  He throws another kick and follows with an overhand right that misses and I throw 1 hard upper cut and the guy is KO'd.

Benny in his prime would have been champ.  Benny fought even in the heavies.,  He has an awesome poster in his old office of him fight a guy 220 and throwing him down that looks unreal.  His entire family fights.  He has the perfect mental attitude.  He throw almost all his punches to hurt.  I was just thinking about him last night and thought I would throw up a thread.  He was probably one of the most famous martial artists in history.  They had a comic book of him in Japan.  I remember the Gracie challenge as I was training with Rorian at the time and friends with Benny.  I can't really remember all the details but I don't remember them fighting.  Benny at the time was past his prime and I think he would have got beat bad.  At that time Rorian was going around making alot of challenges.  He fought a local popular karate guy from So Cal who had a big mouth.  It was funny cause the guy wrapped his arms around the top ring ropes trying to avoid getting taken to the ground.  That lasted about 3 seconds.  Royce took him down and choked the shit out of him.  They put out a challenge to the Navy Seals.  It ended up 5 or 8 of their top fighting Seals came to fight one at a time.  Not one of them last more than a minute.  After that and some instructional moves to show them, Rorian got a contract to teach the Navy Seal fighting.  I haven't seen Benny since I moved to Hawaii.  I was thinking of him because we took a photo one day at his gym before going to breakfast (or lunch).  It had some unreal names like Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, Benny Urquidez, Pete "Sugarfoot" Cunningham, Joe Lewis, Bob Wall, Chuck Norris, Blinky Rodriguez, a couple others whose names I forget and little me.  What was cool was everyone was a world champion in the photo.  I remember Chuck saying "wow you aren't going to see this very often".  Some magazine photographer took it and not sure if it ever made it in a magazine.  But I do remember him saying he would get us all a copy.  Well I never got one and I thought maybe Benny might have one.  So that is how I thought about him.  By the way for the guys who rag me on name dropping.  How is this for name dropping.  By the way, anyone know how to get ahold of Benny PM me.  Yes I am to busy to look right now.  Plus I could only find an email list thing no phone number and his gym is no longer around it seems.
