Shane Carwin Responds to Criticism of Perceived Lack of Media Access

UFC Champions Shane Carwin Brock Lesnar

Interim UFC heavyweight champion Shane Carwin is on the verge of the biggest fight of his career and he’s treating it as such but he’s also gotten his fair share of lumps for not “selling” the fight enough.

We here at 5thRound.com would like to say that although we haven’t spoken to him directly, we respect him and why shouldn’t we? He ranked our editor/lead writer Tom Ngo and 5thRound.com as the #2 MMA blogger .

Following his appearance via satellite during “The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale,” Carwin was chastised by certain members of the media for not “playing the game” to so speak.

Rightfully upset, Carwin took some time to respond on his official website to clear the air about why he hasn’t done as many interviews as he has in the past leading up to his July 3rd showdown with Brock Lesnar at UFC 116.

“I never said I wasn’t doing interviews or eliminating media. I said I was not taking any direct media request. I just do not have the time to spend “just 15 minutes” on the phone answering the same questions over and over,” Carwin wrote.

With the type of notoriety that follows a fighter when they are the main event of a heavyweight title bout, it’s understandable that training time is of the utmost importance but Carwin has made himself extremely accessible on his Twitter account.

Carwin also went on to respond to reports about how much money he would make for his upcoming bout with Lesnar by predicting that he would earn “Knockout of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 116.

“For those of you reporting I am only making $50,000 for this fight and that is the reason behind my limiting media,” Carwin stated. “Please get your facts right it is $80,000 ($40 to show and $40 to win) plus you have to factor in my generous sponsors (THANKS) and the KO and FOTN bonus that will be awarded to me on July 3rd. I would have done it for less, I love competing and testing myself.”

He has also stated numerous times that his not needing to fight to pay the bills also is the secret to his success.

Let's face it, Carwin's not the most popular fighter, and I am sure this is the end of an older contract.

If he wins and re-signs with the UFC, I am sure he will be making more soon.

The same has happened to Franklin, Hughes and many others.

To top it all off, these are also numbers that are reported as 'purse' money. There are a lot of other payouts that legally don't have to be reported publicly.

Rampage was estimated to make 2+ million with his fight with Evans, and much less was actually reported as purse money.

Besides, do you think Carwin would be getting paid more elsewhere?

You are very uninformed.  How much you get is directly related to the contract you have.  And the contract you have is a function of how many viewers you can bring.  The more popular you are, the better your contract.  The better your contract, the more you make. 

That's why guys like GSP, Anderson, BJ Penn, etc. are making so much more. 

BTW, have you noticed the size of the bonuses that the UFC is now handing out?  $85,000 for fight, KO & Sub of the night.

Also, don't forget, some guys get a percentage of the PPV buy...again, part of the controact. 

Lastly, MOST of the money these guys are making is from sponsors.  And, the reason the sponsors are willing to pay is much, is that they get broad & frequent reach to a coveted demographic.  The UFC is the only MMA org that can provide that type of viewership.  I'll give you an example.  For his last fight, Frank Mir had three primary sponsors.  Each paid $150,000 for Frank to put their logos on his shorts, banner, hat & Tshirt.  That's $450,000 from sponsors alone.  Had Frank fought in StrikeForce, those same sponsors would have paid no more than $15,000-$20,000 each.

Not sure when he signed his current contract, but it's quite possible it was several fights ago and he never renegotiated his price.

What's the big fuckin deal, pay me 40grand and I'll get in there with Lesnar.

Carwin most likely signed a multi-fight deal a couple years back that did not include PPV percentages when he was not as popular. Most of the big draws and accomplished fighters that put asses in the seats get these deals.

You know Lesnar is.
