Steele: Why will Obama talk to Ahmadinejad, not Hayward?
Posted: June 9th, 2010
From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

(CNN) – Republicans are continuing to put pressure on President Barack Obama for not speaking directly with BP CEO Tony Hayward during the ongoing oil crisis in the Gulf Coast.

Speaking on Fox News, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Wednesday that he doesn't understand why the president is apparently willing to talk face-to-face with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but not Hayward. In a 2007 presidential debate sponsored by CNN, Obama suggested he would be open to meeting with Ahmadinejad, a comment that drew heavy criticism from his Democratic and Republican opponents. Obama later said that he is willing to meet with Iranian leaders, and that such a meeting "could include" Ahmadinejad.

"I don't get it - you tell the American people that you want to sit down and talk face-to-face with Ahmadinejad, but you don't want to talk face-to-face with the guy that has a hand in creating the mess in the Gulf right now, and to try to figure out from him what needs to get done," said Steele.

The comments come a day after Obama told NBC he has not spoken with Hayward because "when you talk to a guy like a BP CEO, he's gonna say all the right things to me – I'm not interested in words, I'm interested in actions."

Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin took a swipe Tuesday night at Obama for his remarks about Hayward, writing on her Facebook page that he should take a more active role in consulting experts who lived during the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill – including her. Palin was 25 years-old at the time of that spill and writes in her book that "most everyone we knew was directly affected, knew someone affected, or went to help clean up the spill."

Speaking on Fox, Steele said it is imperative Obama speak with Hayward "to impress on him what you as the president of the United States think he as the CEO of B.P. should be
doing."

Talking to Ahmadinejad will get us places. I mean, Iran has been really crippled by the sanctions, what with the hundreds of shell companies they've set up to continue their illegal arms sales and other shady business transactions unimpeded.

I'm still at a loss as to why anyone even acknowledges this guy as the legal President of Iran after the election debacle last year. Or why Iran even thinks they're relevant on the world stage beyond their pursuit of a nuke.  ::)

Notice how Obama never talks about kicking Mahmoud's "@$$". But, he's more than willing to talk with someone, who's just as soon have him, swinging from the gallows as he'd shake the President's hand.

How exactly is Obama handling anything regarding this spill if he hasn't even been in touch with the CEO of BP? Talk about incompetent

1. Obama never met with Ahmadinejad.  it was dumb to say that in a 07 debate, and as president he sure ain't meeting with him.

2. You don't "swing down".  Hayward is a private citizen and the WH already said they'll let their lawyers "kick ass" and make the company pay up.  Why in the world would obama talk to the CEO?   If someone rear ends you in traffic, you get a lawyer - You don't demand a meeting with the CEO of Geico.

My 2 cents.

Agree.  He'll bring two private citizens to the White House for a beer summit, but refuses to talk to Hayward.  His lack of business and executive experience is painfully obvious.

GMAFB!  That spin job is bad even for you.

Obama is supposed to lead for fucks sake and his not calling the CEO of BP is the height of ineptness and incompetence.

How about coordinating efforts?  How about getting a run down of what is going on?  How about presenting a unified front to tackle the problems instead of acting like a punk like ZERO has.

This whole epidose has demonstrated exactly why I call Obama a ZERO.

For Obama not to call the CEO of BP yet have time for parties, b-ball, concerts, 400 million for abbas, says everything I need to know about this incompetent arrogant do-nothing, know-nothing, never-did anything, fool you shill for.

Gibbs: Obama hasn't talked to Hayward because BP board calls the shots
wapo ^ | 6/9/10 | Michael D. Shear

When President Obama was asked by NBC's Matt Lauer why he had not yet called the CEO of BP about the Gulf oil spill, he said he assumed CEO's just told presidents things they wanted to hear.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs had another answer.

Gibbs said Obama hasn't called CEO Tony Hayward because -- according to what Gibbs called the "executive structure of corporate governance" -- the CEO alone isn't the final word on company decisions, which are made by the board of directors.
