Spending takes a big plunge; consumer sentiment strengthens

A big drop in May retail sales has raised new concerns about the durability of the economic recovery.

Retail sales plunged 1.2 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Friday. It was the largest decline in eight months.

But another report revealed a potential silver lining: Consumer sentiment improved in early June to its strongest level in nearly 2 1/2 years, bolstered by hopes of better job and credit conditions.
