One thing is certain about MMA after last night
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:06:39 AM »
It's fighters are nowhere near as skilled as boxers and are complete jokes.  Seeing the #1 ranked heavyweight in the world RUNNING from punches and then curling up on the ground in a fetal position instead of trying to get up made it 100% clear that mma fighters are all the white trash that didnt have the skills to become boxers.
I dont like twinks.

I wouldnt count the top UFC guys as top MMA guys (heavyweights) after that display last night. In many ways Im wondering if the Heavyweights have regressed recently.

Kinda hard to be as skilled as a boxer when you're learning and fighting against others with multiple fight skills...thats why they call it MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. If the wanted to be skilled in just one style they should just stick to that style and fight in that particular sport. Take last night...Lesner can't stand up worth a shit and got his ass kicked by Carwin, Mir and Couture in his stand up.

What makes MMA interesting is that these fighters have a good amount of (even if basic) knowledge in various fighting styles.  They DON'T have to be highly skilled in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai or even Jujitsu.

The mere fact that they have enough options or a solid arsenal of skills to survive, both on the ground and even when it comes to striking, is what makes them exciting to watch.

If you have a boxer and a MMA guy go at it in a streetfight, the odds are pretty simple to figure out.  If they stay standing (striking), the professional boxer will 9 out of 10 times, destroy the MMA guy.  If they go to the ground, the MMA guy will pretty much destroy the professional boxer.

The likelihood that a real fight will remain with both fighters standing is very little.  As we've seen in most street fights, either one of the fighters knocks the other out before it can go to the ground or, inevitably, they will both end up on the ground.

Brock is not the most skilled fighter.  He is not talented when it comes to boxing, jujitsu or even something like that of Muay Thai.  What Brock has is basic knowledge of each that allows him to survive in a fight that could go the distance.  Brock's advantage over most fighters is his sheer size and strength.  Being able to mount yourself on top of another fighter and devastate him with your crushing weight and blows does help, especially if the guy on the bottom is not a talented Jujitsu guy.

I'd love to see a young, professional boxer (say 24 yrs. old), pick up MMA training (hopefully trained by an amazing camp like Xtreme Couture, St. Pierre's team or even a true Jujitsu & Muay Thai camp with many skilled black belt teachers) and after 5-6 years of solid training and semi-pro fights, have his chance in the UFC.

Until we see someone that has amazing skill in boxing, jujitsu and Muay Thai, we shall always speculate with regards to how things would have turned out if so-and-so fighter would have had better striking and/or ground skills.

In the meantime, we should appreciate that these guys are able to give us a fighting display rich in variety and completely spontaneous in result.

What's hilarious is your average MMA/UFC fan watches that shit thinking that's how a real fight would go down.  That think what they see in the "octagon" will make them billy bad ass out in society/the street.  LOL.

Baroni was a golden gloves boxer before he took up MMA.

Comparing a boxer to an MMA fighter is like comparing a sprinter with a decathlete. Someone may be a top class sprinter but he's not going to beat a decathlete in a decathlon.

MMA fighters need to train in punching/kicking/wrestling/submissions - basically anything needed to win the fight whereas a boxer....boxes. Just one aspect of the game. As long as both fighters keep it standing a boxer will have always have a superior advantage until the MMA fighter closes the distance. Boxers will clinch  to get a few seconds reprieve. Do that in a MMA fight and he'll get kneed or taken down immediately.

Way back Bernard Hopkins started making some noise and the challenge was met by Matt Hughes. Hopkins backed out. Sean Sherk was also getting ready to fight a top level boxer who also backed out.
