Hazmat Situation Causes Scare In Heart Of Times Square
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:59:18 AM »
I guess being that NY received millions in anti-terror funding they have to do things to make it seem as though they are putting the money to good use (rather than its usual pocketing of funds). Imagine a cleaning solution spill on the 53rd floor of a high rise office building causes the whole of Seventh Avenue to be shut down. Talk about over doing it. If the "chemical"" was so serious why was the staff of the building who were "contaminated" sent home instead of to a nearby hospital?...Only in NY

A hazmat situation caused a scare in Times Square on August 15, 2010.

From kevinwshields

NEW YORK (CBS 2) – Firefighters responded to Times Square after workers spilled some sort of chemical Sunday at 1515 Broadway.

Dozens of emergency vehicles remained on the scene late Sunday night in Times Square on reports of a 10-gallon chemical spill on the building’s 53rd floor, reports CBS 2′s Dave Carlin.

Sources told CBS 2 that two workers spilled a chemical that is hydrogen peroxide-based. They were exposed to the chemical and had to be decontaminated, but were then sent home.

The fire department shut down Seventh Avenue in the heart of Times Square while authorities investigated the incident, and Hazmat personnel were on-scene.

Onlookers in Times Square didn’t seem to worry thanks to the heavy emergency presence.

“Not concerned. I figured if there was something really wrong, obviously they would make sure we weren’t around,” Jennifer Snelling, visiting the city from Boise, Idaho, said. “[We’re] just watching them do their job and do it well.”

The leak was contained. Authorities said no one’s life was ever in any danger, and that their actions were merely a precaution.

Reminds me of a ridiculous situation we had up here.

An elderly guy walked out of his house and saw some white powder on his front porch. He didn't know what it was, so he called authorities. Fire Engines and Hazmat guys showed up in full gear, and cordoned off his entire street. They even went so far as to set up a makeshift shower in the middle of the street, where the guy's grandson was scrubbed down because he had been walking through it. After all was said & done, they hauled off the material to be analyzed... turned out to be ordinary sidewalk chalk... the kind sold at the dollar stores for kids to create hopskotch boards or whatever else drives their creative little fancies.

Now how ridiculous was that.... Maybe if someone had asked the grandson he would have said he was drawing pictures on the porch or possibly dropped his box or bag of sidewalk chalk on the porch before heading to the sidewalk to do his Michelangelo art work. I can only imagine the police grabbed the child, stripped him naked and near scrapped his skin off with some abrasive pad trying to remove any remnant of "chalk" from his body. Ridiculous
