Top Ten Wealthiest Members of Congress

The richest members of Congress actually got even wealthier last year, even though 2009 saw one of the worst economic downturns in America since the Great Depression, according the The Hill, which released its annual ranking of lawmakers' estimated wealth.

Members of Congress are required to file financial disclosure forms each year, and often report finances in broad ranges. The Hill took the bottom number of each range reported, and incorporated the sums of their liabilities and assets to come up with each number.

The 50 wealthiest lawmakers were worth an estimated $1.4 billion in 2009 - about $85.1 million more than in 2008. The growth is due, in part, to the fact that the stock market actually rebounded last year, helping lawmakers who had large investments.

Three Republicans and seven Democrats made up the top 10 slots, which are nearly the same as the previous year. Senator John Kerry, D-Mass., topped the list for the second year in a row with a whopping estimated worth of $188.6 million. Congressman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, however, joined the list for the first time, replacing representative Harry Teague, D-N.M.

Here are the top ten, along with their estimated worth.

1. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.): $188.6 million

2. Rep. Darrel Issa (R-Calif.): $160.1 million

3. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.): $152.3 million

4. Sen. Jay Rockefeller ( D-W.Va.): $83.7 million

5. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas): $73.8 million

6. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.); $70.2 million

7. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.): $56.5 million

8. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.): $53.5 million

9. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.): $49.7 million

10. Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.): $46.1 million
.

Hahaha. I don't see any of them rushing to spread their wealth, either. But they'll gladly spend yours.

Who is the party of the rich again?

that would be the party who passed the Bush tax cuts (using reconciliation -which required them to sunset in ten years because of the fact that it would increase the deficit).

here's McCain reminding us why he voted against the Bush tax cuts:

I wonder if all these dems railing against those "danged ole Bush taxcuts for the wealthy!" refused to accept them, calculated what their tax would be without them, and sent the IRS the corrected amount?  :-\

Again, I must point out that both parties rule against the will of the people.. holding on to the illusion one party is better than the other just serves their purpose. It keeps people from revolting because we believe we have the power to change things every 4 yrs... Democrats get voted in... it sucks... republicans get voted in...it sucks... we continue to have faith that next time.. it really will be different and they continue to get richer, continue to take money from lobbyist and special interests, even though we don't want them too... So in my opinion, they only have 2 parties because it gives us hope and keeps us at bay while they do whatever they want.. You think they aren't friends across the isle when the cameras are off?

I believe you believe everything you just said.. sadly, this is why in 20 yrs, you and I will still be having this discussion.. because too many people are convinced their party, be it Democrat or Republican, is the one who will save us.. It just shows how successful they have been in dividing our country. Rep/Dem is the political version of Muslim/Christian with both sides believing they are the Christians..

It's pretty amusing that the democratic elite have managed to pull the wool over the eyes of all the poor folk and somehow become the everyman party.

john edwards here in NC was a perfect example.  And I hate when you bring it up that the dem supporters fall back on "well the reps are the same way"  yeah, but they don't pretend to not be wealthy like dems often do to try to be the "common man."

In the past I have voted for both major parties, a few indys too, but as I have gotten older the dems have just totally lost me all together.  there is no part of their agenda that I see that is geared towards me, so why should I?

But.... the Republicans are anti gay... then a Republican congressman is outed by his gay lover. Republicans are pro-family, then a Republican congressman or 6 is outed by his angry mistress,.. The point is... both parties have their issues. I don't fault anyone for picking a political party that suits their personal tastes, I just cringe at the notion people blindly believe their party is the savior of America. I would also humbly add that my opinion which I fashioned over years of watching the political parties, carries no more weight than any of yours. I don't have faith in either party, and I strongly believe that unless something dramtic happens, the status quo will continue for decades to come with Americans losing more and more of their freedoms and pay and both parties of congress getting richer and more powerful.
If you have any doubts as to who's interest either party has at heart, take a look at our tax code, which ALL Americans agree is unnecessarily complicated, and we pay far more taxes annually than we should.

Look at property tax and how the elderly are forced to move from homes they grew up in because they cannot afford to pay the property tax on land they paid off decades ago.  Something we ALL feel is an injustice

Look at  Eminent domain where Americans are kicked out of their homes so businesses can be built, something we ALL agree is wrong but happens all the time
The vacations to Hawaii paid for by lobbyist for politicians of BOTh parties to influence a vote that we ALL agree is wrong but they still do it...
