OVW resurrection:
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:34:19 AM »
Danny Davis & Jim Cornette are starting Ohio Valley Wrestling back up again.
Most of you probably remember that OVW was THE major WWF/WWE developmental promotion about 10 years ago.

Cornette left the company after growing increasingly frustrated with the politics of the “sports entertainment” company with which it was affiliated.
Davis eventually became disgusted enough to close it down all together.

Well, the two men are starting up operations once again, but this time without the big WWE machine behind it.
Davis & Cornette plan to run it as they feel a wrestling company should be run - maybe think Smokey Mountain Wrestling.

Kevin Kelly wrote extensively about this story while offering his views on his former employer (which are never good).

Cornette has always had a good head for the business.
As for Davis, I never thought much of him as a “worker,” but his infamous Louisville promotion turned out some good talent, so he must be doing something right.

My only criticism of Cornette is that he may be just a little too "anti-sports entertainment.”
That certainly isn’t meant to be a slam, but rather an observation.

In part, wrestling evolved because it had to in order to survive.
Cornette’s visions may be a tad passe, but are probably much closer to what would work than the formula currently in use by mainstream pro-wrestling.

If Cornette were to work with WWE or TNA again in the future (and I suspect he will), he might do well to loosen up a bit on his death grip on old-school fundamentals.
Likewise, whoever is fortunate enough to have him backstage would be smart to listen to the man and act on his advice.
I predict/estimate that anything Cornette recommends would carry about a 92% chance of succes for improvement.

Does Cornette still own Smokey Mountain Wrestling basedout of Memphis or is that Jerry Lawler's promotion now?

No.
Cornette closed down SMW towards the end of 1995 because it just couldn’t survive financially, despite a sweet deal with WWF.
Immediately after that, Corny went to work for Vince, who subsequently acquired the rights to the SMW video library.
Go figure.

I honestly never figured out what the deal was with Lawler’s promotion.
I know there was a Memphis Wrestling as well as a Memphis Championship Wrestling, although I'm not sure they were/are one in the same.
I also don’t know that Lawler owned it, but he was at least a booker or something because a lot of guys who came into the WWF starting in the mid-90’s would shit in his crown for being mistreated down there.

Consequently, MCW was also a WWF farm territory for a time.

Ah, I thought something along those lines went down. That whole southern region could have a good territory of their own. They are much different wrestling fans.
