Saw it.  A poor execution of a brilliant idea.  BW & MNS (with or without SJ) are ostensibly working on parts II and III; it was originally conceived as a trilogy.

The trick to happiness is having something to do. Too much money and you get lazy or have to work too much. No money and your limited. Happiest people I know, keep busy. It's pretty simple, having shit don't make you happy. Just like having the girl isn't the best part it's trying to get one.

Started an advertising company in my 20's. Sold it, but now still employed as a consultant for the company. Good job and good fun

hold on, so you're making 500K a year by working for the company you sold earlier, right?

Wouldnt you be earning more if you had kept the company instead of selling it?

Willl - this is the cost/benefit analysis anyone who considers selling all or part of a business needs to consider. In my case, I had to calculate what I thought I could reasonably earn had I maintained control vs the benefit of getting a pay-off immediately, but a loss of control. I felt that getting a decent of cash up-front enabled me to diversify away from one business, into a range of income producing assets - stocks, property, investing in start-ups, and also a few "fun" investments (bars, restaurants, etc). Also I figured that after my restraint of trade period expired, worst case scenario, I could in any case start a similar company, especially as so mych of my business is about contacts.

In USD? It would be around 3.8m (at that time). Since then, I grew that money into around 8-9m USD (is fluctuates depending on how the market moves). The assets I have now produce a return of around 5-6% after tax. Is a nice position to be in, as provided I manage carefully I will always be able to live quite a nice life.

I have a mixture of friends - some who earn very little (work in bars or stores etc probably think I am super rich). Other guys I know are way way riicher than me - I am talking 100m, with some people over a Billion (family businesses).

not to mention as an employee you can literally punch out on the  clock and not worry about it for a couple hours/days. as an owner you are never 'off' work. even at night laying in bed the business controls you to some degree.

My time now at the company is mainly spent on client relations, and management. I get lots of time for training at they gym, do a bit of entertaining on some evenings (usually only with cleints I actually like). Its really a good life.

don't you feel guilty when the manager at mcdonalds is working x10 harder than you and getting shit pay and living in a crappy apartment and is consumed with hours hardly able to apply for any other jobs, we need socialism.

I treat everyone in those kind of jobs with respect (at least initially when I meet them). Most of the guys I train with at the gym have "ordinary jobs". I have no guilt about pay disparity in the US. Many of the people at McDonalds etc had a decent chance to get educated and made a choice to work there. Where I do feel a bit more guilty though is seeing extreme poverty in countries such as India, where people (or kids especially) have really never had a fair start to life, and little realistic hope of much better.

Mortgage, cars, utilities, food, kids, schooling, clothing, normal family vacations, etc. Fucking shit adds up.

I'm not crying poor, but if anyone making over $75K wants to give any away, just so they stay right at that ideal level, just PM me.

outside of NY n Cal...i've always said 72k was the magic number...given you walk away with 4k after taxes, insur, etc.  it's like a 100k+ salary esp in the southern states.  1k mortgage  in TX =
