A bail bondsman arrested recently on charges of possessing and selling steroids also worked for the company that administers New Hanover County’s ankle-monitoring system for inmates awaiting trial.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested Shawn David Sullivan, 40, of 7901 Bonaventure Drive in Wilmington, and charged him with multiple steroid offenses Oct. 2.
Sullivan is a bail bondsman for All American Bail Bonding and was suspended from his job as a salesman for Tarheel Monitoring, a company that contracts with the county to provide the ankle-monitoring program.
Michelle Taylor, pretrial release specialist with the New Hanover County Pretrial Release Program, said Sullivan was suspended without pay after the allegations surfaced.
Taylor said Sullivan had handled the technical side of the business, maintaining computers and equipment.
On Friday, Grady Richardson, attorney for Tarheel Monitoring, e-mailed the following statement to the StarNews.
“Upon Mr. Sullivan’s arrest, Tarheel immediately suspended his employment with Tarheel until the disposition of his charges,” he wrote. “Upon disposition of his charges, Mr. Sullivan’s employment status with Tarheel will be reviewed and assessed at that time.”
Richardson said Sullivan “was not involved in the day-to-day services Tarheel provides to the county,” and added he’d been working as an outside sales representative for Tarheel.
But it was Sullivan’s employer, All American Bail Bonding, that posted Sullivan’s $10,000 bond two hours after he was brought to the New Hanover County jail, according to court and jail officials.
