This New Men's Physique Division!

HEY! Regardless of what some of us negative type GetBiggers have to say about this new Division, I can almost guarantee ya that it will be a major success.

And I can almost guarantee ya that it will be larger than NPC Men's Bodybuilding within the next three to four years.

I've already received a number of phone calls and emails asking, "What do you think? Should I give it a try?", and in the majority of cases I say, "Yes! Definitely!"

I answer in the affirmative because most I have spoken with don't have the drive, the heart, nor the desire to stand on stage next to likes of Jay, or Green, or any of the other current, 'outstanding' pros. They just don't want to do what it takes ... but they do want to compete.

So this new Division will give them that opportunity. In fact I think we'll be seeing more than a couple of today's pros actually drop that massive look and consider the possibility of competing in this new Division themselves.

Now I wonder if the IFBB/NPC has considered that possibility?

Will one or more of today's IFBB pros be eligible to "drop down" and enter Men's Physique on the IFBB level (or possibly even on the NPC level)?

In the past I've recommended that some of you better built guys (and one lady too) get a Hollywood agent in the hopes of breaking into the movie biz as a super-hero of some sort. (I've mentioned the new SUPERBOY possibility a number ot times.)

This new Division could offer some of your dudes and dude-ettes  the opportunity to get rich within fields that were previously not available - Fitness model, Supplement representative, Super-hero actor/actress, etc., etc.

Believe me, it's happened before and I'm proud to say that I was involved in a minor way which led to the creation of a major star. And that's an HONEST statement.

The opportunity is there! You just have to avoid the negative bullshit and grab it.

This division will be a success in drawing competitors, just like bikini and figure.  That's good for the NPC.  Unfortunately, fan interest will not be there which is bad for the IFBB.

The big problem which may not be too apparent to most of you GetBiggers is the fact that this new NPC Men's Physique Division will add an hour or more to the prejudging and another hour or more to the evening finals.

I'd have to ask Bob to confirm or un-confirm this but I have seen the auditorium clear out by 50% or more after the ladies' trophy presentation which usually always precedes the men's finals. And that meant that the house was always less than half full when the men come on stage.

This is somewhat similar to the AAU days of yore when the men's finals would only start after the trophies were passed out to the Olympic lifters .... and sometimes the bodybuilders took the stage sometime after midnight and their trophies would be presented while the sun was coming up. This was one of the reasons (among many others) why there was a move afoot to separate bodybuilding from the AAU back then.

My personal recommendation regarding these NPC events is to consider the possibility of combining all the women's events into one contest instead of three (fitness, figure, bikini) while keeping the female bodybuilding separate  as it is something completely different (it appears to be disappearing anyway).


And you have to realize that within Figure and Bikini contests you have Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D.

And 40+, 50+, and 60+ Men's BB Masters.

The above is all well and good for contests that can afford a two day event but it's damn near impossible to accomplish within a daytime and still keep all the participants and fans and officials content and in their seats.

There are a vast number of other pro and con factors that I have not addressed here  but I do tend to sort of agree with Howard a bit when he says that the bodybuilders are 'being sacrificed' for the sake of too many 'contenders' and when it's their (the men bodybuilders) turn to hit that posing platform, most everyone has returned home to get some shut-eye.

The Olympia and Arnold classic still sell out for the men's bodybuilding and the expo does well, etc.
This is simple "Yearbook 101" marketing. ie. take some pics of people and their friends  and they will buy the book even if nobody else does.
Just like bkini did, you simply generate $$ by large # of enty fee's. Then, everyone who competes will bring at least 1 friend or family member and they buy a ticket. The new NON bodybuilding divsions don't require anything more except time as stunt has pointed out.
BUT the promoter rented the venue for the weekend , so they don't give a shit.

What you end up with is a bathing suit pageant that features some men's bodybuilding.
99% of the ticket buying audiance will know someone in the show.

It will be now be avg fitness type bodies , one after the other , on and on and on.
Not my thing.

The only fair way to do this is to have a definitive starting time for each event.  In other words, print the times for each division on the ticket and stick to it.  Of course, accommodating the fans is the last thing the NPC/IFBB thinks about.

in mens physique division it's like "damn that guy is so pretty" 

if so the judges should be females only?

Or "good looking" may be more appropriate, but I don't think that the face will be taken into consideration. At least that's not mentioned in the guidelines.

I have a feeling that the judges for this event will consist of a mixture of men and women with the possibility of an additional female..... like 4 men and 5 women or 3 and 4 depending on the total number of judges that will be used.

I also think that the major supplement companies will be interested in this event and offer sponsorship packages to the top contenders in the belief that more people would be interested in their product lines than if those same products were advertised by the majority of the IFBB Pros.

It will be interesting to see how this all works out next year.

I do think that it would be beneficial for the contenders if the NPC would allow each participant to display various company logos on their shorts/trunks similar to the way it is done among the MMA fighters. There may be a question about this for the NPC amatuers but it should be given some deep thought for those Physique Division guys who get IFBB Pro status,
