LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tennis star Pete Sampras says most of his trophies and other memorabilia were stolen from a West Los Angeles public storage facility.

The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Sampras still has 13 of his 14 grand slam trophies.

But thieves took most of the hardware from his 64 tour title wins, two Davis Cups, an Olympic ring and six trophies for finishing world No. 1 in the year-end rankings from 1993 to 1998.

The theft happened three weeks ago. Sampras says he’s getting the word out in hopes somebody offers a lead.

Sampras retired in 2003 and said the loss is most upsetting because he would have liked to have shown the trophies to his children.

He says the loss “is like having the history of my tennis life taken away.”

WTF is wring with these people?   Seriously  - a public storage facility for that stuff?  Did this cluebag not think some worker might tip off some of his boys to rob the stuff?

agreed... if they were that important to him, he'd have a trophy case in his living room lol

Or at least something secure.  This dude probably has a mansion - did he ever hear of the attic or basement?

The must have meant a tremendous amount to him if he kept them in a storage facility.

Sounds like an inside job.   He should check Ebay for the next few months.

The trophies, etc, are too recognizable as they have his name and title. If these weren't stolen to order, then you have a bunch of thieves who now have no idea what to do with these things, and will either dump them, or get caught in some stupid way. I think they'll be found, wiped clean, in a specified location.

There has got to be a video of this unless it was an inside job to to where the workers covered it up.

That'd be excellent, but a lot of these places are remote locations where long-term leases are standard, and costs are kept minimized. I think that, chances are, they're too hot to handle. I guess we're gonna see. Hope there's not gonna be a Pete Sampras/OJ Simpson-hotel room-type repo-thingy going on.

I saw this story on Pawn Stars , where this tow truck drive was called to pick up a scrapped car from a Storage unit, the owner of the unit didnt pay for 3 months so they cleaned it out, the tow truck driver was paid $200 to tow the Scrap car out, he then took it to pawn stars cus he thought the car was a shelby cobra ,

Turns out the Car was a real Shelby and gave that dude $25,000 for it, lucky tow truck drive made $25,200 ...... its crazy what morons keep in storage units

Yes! There was a similar story about storage locker purchasing just recently. Some guy bought a locker which had the contents of the first American Marine who died in Afghanistan, with all accordant honours. I was pretty mixed about it. I mean, what family let's such a thing go into repossession, and what kind of scum tries to make a profit on such a thing.

/sorry, this has a better ending. linky:http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2010/12/fallen_marines_personal_effect.html
