I'm sure they had to during that era.  Can you imagine strutting into a honkytonk in Dallas after just going over The Von Erich's in a six-man by cracking Kerry with a chair?  you know there were plenty of good ole boys wanting to settle the score.
That actually used to happen to Piper & Bob Orton Jr alot. Piper was that hated in the mid eighties.

No doubt.....here in the mid-atlantic territory the hatred for him was off the charts.  He was a great heel.

Lol...his exact words were "Warrior was the biggest dickwad I ever worked with." Funny how no one has anything positive to say about Hellwig. Shows you what a dickhead he really is.

Anyone seen the shoot interview the Warrior did a few years ago?  It's a great interview, but what came through most was that it was just a job; no passion for the business at all.  I get the feeling it was all about the paycheck, and a belt was just an extra zero on the end of said paycheck.  Sad, really.

Exactly. That's just it. He didn't care about the business at all or anyone in it. On the flip side, Warrior is very well spoken and very intelligent and shoot interviews are extremely interesting. Too bad he's an assclown.

but none of those people making the negative comments could connect with a crowd or sell merchandise the way Warrior could.

lots of jealousy there.

100 years from now, people will still be talking about Hogan-Warrior at WM6.

no one will be talking about most of the people bad mouthing him.

just saying.

I still can't recall any other match where someone hits his finisher FIVE times, only to have his opponent kick out

I agree that it was a bit over the top, but in all honestly, by that point in his career, savage's elbow drops were not like they used to be.

his feet used to hit the ground first by then.

UW was a big pushover from everything I have heard.  Suffered from massive insecurities and entitlement issues.  (Bad combination)
Eddie Gilbert once called him the biggest headache he ever had to work with.

There was another story going around (not sure if true) of all the guys in WCCW sitting around in a bar drinking one night after a house show and Warrior comes in and start running down the Freebirds about their drinking and how the alcohol was slowly killing them on the inside.  Buddy Roberts stood up with the bottle in his hand and said this bottle might be killing us slowly but it will kill you a lot faster if I hit you over the head with it.  Warrior scooted out of the room and went to complain about threats being made to him.

Here's one of my favorites: Heenan's description of Warrior, getting knocked silly, by Andre the Giant (courtesy of "The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior")

I remember he had a match with Andre, and it almost ended his career. Andre used to like to take a clothesline. And he told him in the dressing room; he told him, "I'm going to swing with the clothesline; you duck. And, I'm going to hit the ropes and take two steps off. And then, hit me with the clothesline and I'm going to tie myself into the ropes!" And, Andre liked to do that spot.

So, Andre missed him with the clothesline. As soon as Andre turned around, he was there, 150 miles an hour......BANG!!!!
(Heenan emulates Warrior hitting Andre with a hard clothesline, before Andre was ready) And, I heard Boss (Andre's nickname in the locker room) go "MMMMMMMMMM!!!!" Something's going to happen here. Next night, same thing happens, 200 miles per hour....BANG!!!!! (Warrior hits Andre too hard with a clothesline again, before Andre is ready)......"MMMMMMMMM!!!"

Third night, 338 miles per hour.....And just as he gets there, Andre goes.....
(Heenan sticks out his arm with his fist clenched, emulating Andre's doing the same in the ring against Warrior) and hits the Warrior right between the eyes and cracked his paint. We're talking whole shide job, here. His knees buckled; he grabbed onto the ropes (Heenan imitates a dizzy Ultimate Warrior, fumbling to get to ropes)...didn't really know where he was.

Next night, here comes the Warrior:
(Heenan uses his fingers to describe Warrior cautiously running toward Andre and hitting him with a somewhat soft clothesline) Dink-da-dink-da-dink......BINK!!!! Andre looks at me and says, "He'll learn!!!" Andre just put his hand up and stopped him. He would stand on his hair; he would do all sorts of things to him. Andre just didn't like the guy, either.

A while back, I posted footage of a match from Japan in which Maeda tried to shoot with Andre.
Actually, to me, it looked like the idiot was just trying to knock Andre down to the mat by kicking out his legs (which were in bad shape at that time).
But, he must not have thought about what he would do after that, because Andre soon voluntarily laid down and “invited” Maeda to shoot on the mat, at which point the little prick stormed out of the ring and threw a tantrum.
Apparently, a lightbulb went off in his head.

But, how bright was that?
Most guys in the business knew that Andre was trained in catch-style wrestling by the Englishmen.
Why would you want to shoot with or piss off a guy who has comparable skills but much more size & strength than two of you?

Anyway, I posted the match on this board some time ago, but the youtube account it belonged to is no longer active.

The story of Andre that is in my head was when he did a show in Montreal. After the show, he hit a bar with Frenchy Martin and Rene Goulet who were two of his closest friends. 4 guys tried to harrass him and kept pestering him. He jsut kept blowing them off and said he only wanted to have a drink and wasn't looking for trouble. Of course these frogs kept bothering him. According to Frenchy, he chased them all out, they ran in their car (a small Honda) and andre was so pissed he litterally flipped the car over with all four of them in it.

I remember that vid.  and like you said, what in the world was that little turd going to do with andre if he knocked him off his feet?  What an idiot.

Yeah, I doubt that he thought things through.
Probably just wanted to make a name for himself as the guy who knocked Andre down.
Taking advantage of a heavy guy with bad knees and back problems sounds more like it.

He was a coward, though, only going after Andre's biggest weakness.
Once Andre offered to shoot on the mat, Maeda backed off.

That would be like Karl Gotch having a cast on his leg, me kicking out his good leg causing him to fall, and then dancing around as though I "beat" him.
Meantime, that Hungarian fukker would tie this Hungarian fukker (me) in knots with one hand.

I believe as I heard it that he got so pissed that he basically slammed his closed fist down on the bar and it split the bar in 2.

I dont know if anyone has listed this one but how about Jake Roberts being blinded by Rick Martel? I was hooked, sucked in by the promos they did with him screaming "my eyes are burning" and his road to recovery culminating in their memorable blindfold match .

I also remember Cactus going AWOL and i think it was Dustin Rhodes that traced him to a back alley somewhere? So long ago i cant recall it with precision but it was half decent for the time.
