We need more Civil War films that show Lincoln as he really was in history. Like that time he imprisoned 40,000 people in the North using the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, jailing journalists, politicians, including arresting 1/3 of the Maryland General Assembly Lawmakers. Shutting down over 300 newspapers to stifle any truth from the battlefields and political maneuvers. The State Maryland Anthem still has lyrics that refer to Lincoln as a tyrant and despot.
Thats not even the tip of the Iceberg. Lincoln still holds the record for ordering the largest Mass Execution in US History on a single day when he gave the signed order to hang 38 Indians in Minnesota. Maybe I will make a thread about all of this fascinating stuff.
Top notch thread hijack, TA.
Reprehensible as the South's slave labour economy was, the war was the result of a Northern legislature moving the goal posts for their own benefit to the detriment of the South. It was the North which seceded from the status quo.
Lots of bullshit and gunsmoke then as now. Race relations, the braying about a centralized federal government, the persistent perception of a cultured North vs a backward South. Like every war, however, it was about money. And like every war it got advertised - advertised hard - as being about anything except money. And people killed and died for instilled fear and bullshit propaganda. Same as it ever is.
