So many of you have failed to see what the article was saying. The average person in these states who is poor lives atleast 10 miles from a grocery store and has no car to get there. So how can they go BUY that cheap healthy food? They will have to walk. Keep in mind there is no public transit in rural Mississippi. So these poor folk with no car will have to walk 10 miles and buy groceries? They will then have to carry them 10 miles all the way home. So you can only buy what you can carry. This means no stocking up or buying in bulk. How long do you think it takes to walk 20 miles plus shopping time? Now add in walking with a child or two. Are you people getting the picture? McDonalds around the corner and 7-11 on the other corner. See any carrots or died beans at 7-11? People go to work say at 8:00a.m. and get off 5 or 6p.m. and then after working all day walk 10 miles to grocery store? Throw in the fact that the poorer you are you probably work manual labor or a waitress and have already been on your feet all day. So walk to and from the store and get home around 8 or 9p.m. and then cook dinner for the kids. You work all day and are exhausted and just want to eat and the unhealthy stuff is more available. Are you getting the picture here?
