Alistar Responds to UFC buyout of StrikeForce
« on: March 14, 2011, 02:20:29 PM »
"I was shocked when I read it, but I'm very excited. It's a very big upset in the MMA world, and the fighting world in general. But yeah, my first thought was, I'm excited. ... I see things through a positive lens. It can be really, really the best thing [that] ever happened to the sport, if it's used positive, and I see that happening. If it's used negative, then it's going to be a downfall. But I don't see that happening. I see this as a good thing, a good development, so I see the sport growing. We're going to have to wait and see how it works out. The fans are going to get to see the fights that are most appealing to them. I think this is what the sport needs to grow, because the sport has grown rapidly, but it's still not there yet. It still needs to grow bigger. I think [UFC president] Dana wants this and I know I want this as well. We want the fights to be worldwide known. We want everybody worldwide to talk about these fights, like in the old days with Muhammad Ali and [Mike] Tyson, and we're not there yet. To get there, there's still some work to be done and I think Dana's working on that."

Scott Coker Responds...

"This is an important day for the sport of mixed martial arts. We are excited to work with Lorenzo Fertitta, Frank Fertitta, Dana White and everyone at the UFC on the quest to make MMA the biggest sport in the world. Fans can continue to expect quality Strikeforce shows and we look forward to giving our athletes an even broader platform on which to perform."

Josh Barnette Responds...

"Things have changed. This is major and great things can come from it and I just want to be a part of that, and the way I can best do that is be the best fighter I can be ... I’m not here to make this a personal vendetta or judgment with [Dana], especially in terms of business. I know what I’ve got to do and I know what his position is in terms of being the president of the UFC, and that he has excelled at. He’s done a great job. It makes a difference with everything ... If he hates me, he hates me; but if he sees the value in what I bring to the table as a fighter I think that will speak for itself. But you know what? I don’t hate Dana and I do business, and I’ll go out there and do the absolute best that I can do and if he happens to be my employer … literally, if Dana White has an office that I have to write into every day, because that’s the person I report to for my business, well that’s what I’ll do. There is a part of me that absolutely wishes that things between myself and the UFC had worked out differently. ... Dana likes to go out there and crush, kill, pillage, whatever; and let’s face it, that’s kind of my M.O. As much as I may have ever had difficulty with Dana at the end of the day there is a part of me that absolutely vibes with what he is does. Whether he wants to think about it or not, here and now, no bulls**t, Dana White is pretty f--king metal and I am a metal dude … we’ll at least have that sort of respect that can’t be overlooked."

Todd Duffy Responds...

"My first thought was all the great possible match-ups we will get to see. I understand they will be operating separately for some time but I hope when they say cross promotion they are saying mega fights will happen not just strike force will have a booth at the fan expos. More unified rules and possibly better judging due to the fact that zuffa will have more power to help make those changes. Another step in gaining the same respect the NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB etc. Strikeforce will now have the money to put on more shows meaning guys won't have to sit on the shelf for long periods of time. More shows means possibly more free shows. More pull within the japanese market due to strikeforces good relations which might save Japanese mma. The naysayers can now be ignored an we can rest assured that the tourney will go on. Also the greater possibility of more tournaments in the future as a feeder into the big shows."

Dana's credibility in general will take a beating if he keeps josh around.

I think Barnett would be a good addition.  Granted his best fights are behind him.  But someone needs to get beaten up by the top 5 guys.  And I think his name will always produce somewhat of an interest.

He would be a good addition, but at the same time, Barnett would have to finalize all suspensions and fines with the CSAC before fighting or getting a new contract.

The mainstream media would have a field day if they heard the UFC signed and allowed a fighter to fight while his license was suspended by a certain commission for steroids.

If I remember correctly, Barnett can only fight in a select few states that don't honor other commissions suspensions.

Funny how arrogant pricks like Barnett think they can beat the system and live in their own world by their own rules.

It's all catching up to him, and now Uncle Dana holds the key to his MMA future.

How do you know he doesnt possess skills anymore? The 2005 version of Barnett was a formidable fighter and wouldn't get beaten up by most of the top 5 fighters. But who knows he hasnt fought since forever.

Exactly, we just don't know.  He has to been some respectable opponents first.  Doesn't look like we'll know anytime soon.  Rodgers isn't what you call 'top of the food chain' by any means.

Bill, I don't know.  My point is that we need more HW fighters in the UFC.  I don't think he's too viable anymore though.

Barnett is irrelevant now anyways and I dont think we'll ever see him fight a top fighter ever again. Shame what a waste of talent.

Can't teach an arrogant idiot how to be a scholar...

Besides, isn't Barnett around Allistar enought to maybe pick up a few pointers on cycling.

Barnett will have no effect on the top Heavies anymore. Just can't see any interest in a Barnett-v-Gonzaga matchup

I agree that Barnett is irrelevant these days, but what Gonzaga are you referring too?

Like I said before, Barnett is a good gate-keeper at this point.  Someone needs to get beaten by the top.

Gabriel.

Used him as example of someone the public isn't rushing out to see fight.

Gonzaga
Herring
Mir
etc.

I got ya :)  Gonzaga was talking about retiring after his recent release from the UFC, but he was considering fighting in some small org last I read.
