Nearly Half of Americans Are ‘Financially Fragile’
Wall Street Journal Blogs ^ | May 25, 2011 | Phil Izzo

Nearly half of Americans say that they definitely or probably couldn’t come up with $2,000 in 30 days, according to new research, raising concerns about the financial fragility of many households.

In a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Annamaria Lusardi of the George Washington School of Business, Daniel J. Schneider of Princeton University and Peter Tufano of Harvard Business School used data from the 2009 TNS Global Economic Crisis survey to document widespread financial weakness in the U.S. and other countries.

The survey asked a simple question, “If you were to face a $2,000 unexpected expense in the next month, how would you get the funds you need?” In the U.S., 24.9% of respondents reported being certainly able, 25.1% probably able, 22.2% probably unable and 27.9% certainly unable. The $2,000 figure “reflects the order of magnitude of the cost of an unanticipated major car repair, a large copayment on a medical expense, legal expenses, or a home repair,” the authors write. On a more concrete basis, the authors cite $2,000 as the cost of an auto transmission replacement and research that reported low-income families claim to need about $1500 in savings for emergencies.

Financial fragility isn’t limited to low-income groups. “Households with socioeconomic markers of vulnerability (income, wealth, wealth losses, education, women, families with children) are more likely to be financially fragile, and substantially more so,” the authors write. “The more surprising finding is that a material fraction of seemingly ‘middle class’ Americans also judge themselves to be financially fragile, reflecting either a substantially weaker financial position than one would expect, or a very high level of anxiety or pessimism. Both are important in terms of behavior and for public policy.”

Part of the reason that it is, and its certainly not the whole reason, as i am sure 33333 will blame the way Obama ties his shoes and ignores the economy as the reason, is that most people don't know how to spend, save and budget.

Shit has been that way with most people for a long time.   Start with bottled water and end with buying lobster with food stamps.

And don't even try and say you weren't going to blame Obama some way.  lol

This is on people themselves not svng and not making tough decisions.

I see these broads all the time with fancy jeans, ipods, purss, etc, and none of them save a dime.

Same for the guys.   a ton of guys where i live - half their paycheck goes to the BMW payment or Mercedes lease.

I agree its stupid.  Some of it is just growing up and learning.  Some people never learn.

What trips me out is gambling.  Just 45 min from where i live is a Indian casino that's comparable in size to many vegas casino and its full up all the time.  People there just pouring money out.  It's baffling.  Vegas is the same way.  I been there 4 times since 2007 and every time its wall to wall people.

That's why i don't always pay too much attention to what the media says about the economy.

I went to foxwoods in CT last month - played $5, walked outwith $16, and walked out.

ha ha ha.

All kidding aside, this story really shocked me.       Having only 2k at my disposal would send me into panic and sleepless nights.

By the way, "probably able" is just as good as saying "can't" these days with people. The number is higher than nearly half, in that sense. It's a good thing Americans used their resourcful nature to get to the point they are at now, imgaine where they would be if they were stupid and lazy. pft.

Just because there are wall to wall people in a Casino doesnt mean the economy isnt going into the shitter. During the Great Depression alot of gambling was legalized to stimulate the economy. The worse the economy gets the more some people will actually gamble what they have left in an attempt to win some more desperatly needed money.  It's a crazy cycle of desperation for some. As soon as one looses it all and that means literally everything at times, theres another to take their place.

this is the meat of it, I bet that the majority of ppl dont know how to reconcile their bank accounts...

most ppl probaby couldnt tell you off the top of their heads how much money they will have to pay in bills next month or how much their income will be...

Basic finance needs to be a core class in college, seriously ppl are as uneducated about basic finance as they are about working out and nutrition and we all know how much the avg person knows about that

As one of those people I can say that learning to suppress such thoughts has become an art form.  ;D :-\

Even if you save twenty dollars a week, over time it will add up.

I've heard many working Americans, maybe on average, have as a goal or as a resolution to save $100 a month, or to achieve $1,000 total in savings as a cushion.   ::)

Now, I'm talking about working American citizens with good salaries who could easily adjust their standard of living and easily save $1,000 - $2,000 a month and achieve a total of $30,000 or more in savings as a cushion in a short time.

But NOOOOOoooo, they have to have their huge house, their two or more luxury cars, eat out every day, go on expensive vacations, go shopping all the time, etc.  Not that there is anything wrong with any of these things, as long as you can afford them and as long as you are able to save enough for a rainy day and for retirement!
