My mother's crazyness reaching beyond the grave...

The airconditioning in my mom's/my house has gone out...I went and got a window unit so I can use the bedroom I sleep in and defer the expense of repairing the central unit until next year.  I discover upon returning from the Sears with the window unit that my mother had 15 years previously glued all the windows shut...every one of them.

I remember her asking me at the time if that would be a good idea,..to which I replied, "no, please don't do that"...My neighbor confided to me...finally...that mom was furious with me for opposing her gluing the windows shut,...shouting, "what does he know!"

My mother would automatically proceed to do things I opposed, and automatically not do things I favored...It was like living on the Planet Bizzarro...

I hope you realize that she may have had mental issues and her weirdness may not have actually had to do w/you.  And, I would like to give you a hug sync pulse.

Glued and sealed with paint,...I know she did it purposely because she thought it would make the central air conditioning work better...But I had told her specifically that it would not...I told her specifically the things she had to do to make the air conditioning work better...Radiant barriers, blanket insulation and ridge vents in the attic.

The problem is that she would always do what was diametrically opposite to what I told her she should do....in everything, in absolutely everthing in everything from finances to letting me be in the stage band at school.

She purposely applied glue to the side rails of the windows while they were open...for the entire length and width... a swath of glue three inches wide and three feet long on both sides...I tried to use knives, slim jims,  what have you...If all she did was apply glue and paint along the window while it was closed, it would work to use a knife,...but she did it while the window was open along the entire width and length of the exposed jamb.  I know she did this because her neighbor watched her do it,...then close the window on the wet glue.

A carpenter said that it is hopless,  to try and force the things loose and open would destroy them.
the only solution is replace the windows...I can't afford that because I used all my money on her health care/assisted living the last years of her life, her dental work alone came to 4,400 dollars.

All this on a woman who mercilessly abused me emotionally during childhood.

You think you could saturate the jams with any kind of chemical?  "Goof Off" or something?

no, singles,...double hung are rare along the Gulf Coast.  It is so hot that opening the upper windows don't help much...the house originally had a "whole house ventilator"...a huge electric fan 6 feet long and 4 feet wide with a shutter system in the ceiling.  When it would run, the shutters would open in the ceiling and the fan would lower the pressure in the living areas of the house and air would flow in from the open windows,...up through the fan into the attic,... then out through a vent above the front door and under two eaves and out.  This would bring in marginally cooler air that felt good because it was moving air and would flush out the hot air from the attic so that you didn't have a huge mass of superheated air radiating into the living space.

You should get one of those AC units that sit in the room that you cut the round vent hole for.  You could also just cut the window out completely and surround the window unit in plywood painted to match the trim?

Yes I know, I will probably knock out the glass and rig some sort of frame.  But it is so frustrating that it is now a major project when I should just be able to hang it in a window under normal circumstances.  

Those air conditioners that vent through a tube are expensive compared to the refrigeration btu that you get from them.

sounds like my wife..she does the same thing....I stopped giving my opinion on things due to this because she would always do the exact opposite of what my opinion was...soon I began to manipulate her by pretending to not want her to do something just so she would do it....and vice-versa

I felt bad about manipulating her, but too bad..it was better for my own sanity

If you have insurance, get some kids from the neighborhood to throw in your windows with stones, or do it yourself at night.

If the insurance pays, fine, if not, get some nice blue plastic garbage bags and put them over the broken windows.
