I don`t believe that squatting or deads makes a guys waist blocky, unless the guy is very short, stocky, and carrying a higher than average bf%.

Total bullshit IMO.

i'm going to try this.
Its awesome bro - your back is pre-exausted from the rows and chin/pulldown movements - this really finishes it off - you really feel all of the muscles of the back contract - really focus on squeezing hard at that throw back with your shoulders . . - obviously you wont be moving the same type of weight as if you did at the start but thats not needed  8) - Let us know what you think .

If "bodybuilding" is your goal, you dont need them. At least not in every workout.

BB rows will do the job.

I did this for years and highly recommend it. Obv I have never done rack deads nor would I, you need to move the heaviest weight you can. But the best gains I made on my back came from the following routine.

Machine or dumbell pullovers, reverse grip pulldowns on hammer strength or, from time to time, on a pulley station, reverse grip barbell rows, behind the neck pulldowns, deadlifts, hypers. Literally transformed my back over the years.

My reasoning was that midback seems to get hit from everything directly while the lats seem to need some pre-exhaust otherwise they perform more indirectly during rows and deads. In order to really hit my lats doing either exercise, I would pre-exhaust with pullovers (probably my #1 lat building exercise) followed by pulldowns (or pull ups, if you are strong enough) and then move into rows and deads. If I start with rows, I never feel it in my lats. Doing them 3rd I get an intense squeeze. Deadlifts after all of that make my lats burn and ache like no other. Perfect routine IMO. Alternate with overhand rows (barbell only, don't get a damn thing out of db rows) and from time to time add in low pulley rows.

I used to do like a 6 exercise back workout, would take me nearly 2 hours, and my back always responded well.

Also FWIW deads will NOT thicken your waist, what kind of nonsense is that? A thick waist means large obliques I suppose, though I have no clue how you can achieve that. Your abdominals and obliques are fairly shallow muscles and fairly resistant to hypertrophy, I wouldn't worry about "thickening" them.

I will say I do front squats and not back squats because I feel back squats build glutes/hips over quads and doing too many back squats will give you a squatty powerlifter look, but deadlifts are a bread and butter.
