Pay Pal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel has given $1.25 million to an initiative to create floating libertarian countries in international waters, according to a profile of the billionaire in Details magazine.

Thiel has been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch--free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place. Details says the experiment would be "a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons."

"There are quite a lot of people who think it's not possible," Thiel said at a Seasteading Institute Conference in 2009, according to Details. (His first donation was in 2008, for $500,000.) "That's a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late."

The Seasteading Institute's Patri Friedman says the group plans to launch an office park off the San Francisco coast next year, with the first full-time settlements following seven years later.

Thiel made news earlier this year for putting a portion of his $1.5 billion fortune into an initiative to encourage entrepreneurs to skip college.

Another Silicon Valley titan, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced in June that he would be funding the "Clock of the Long Now." The clock is designed to keep ticking for 10,000 years, and will be built in a mountain in west Texas.

What is wrong with the United States of America, the country that allowed him to prosper in the first place?

Fuck him.  Fucking coward.   He rather tuck tail and run, rather than try to improve America.

Perhaps they can take Ron Paul with them on one of those Libertarian Islands.  He would have no problem Arming each one with Nukes and selling them to Iran.  Fuck these people.

No I want Bernie Sanders for President or Dennis Kucinich actually or Mike Gravel. I hope this helps.

Dennis Kucinich on Ron Paul

This is old news you know. Personally I think Ron Paul is the best of the Republican Party.  Too bad there are zero others in his party like him.  All of your favorites, Bachmann, Palin and such are the complete opposites.

How do you process that in your brain and reconcile that?  Ron Paul and Palin/Bachmann are polar opposites.  You can`t be for Paul and then be for Bachmann or Palin or anyone else in the Republican Party.  It just doesn`t work and it means you really have no firm principles.

If Libertarians want to leave the United States, fine, don`t let the door hit you on the ass.

I'm more concerned about the dangers here...

Suppose some off-shore entreepreneur decides to "rent a room" to spies, terrorists, whatever.  Just 12.5 miles off US shores, able to do anything they'd like?

Methinks they'll have 'technical problems' and find themselves sinking haha

Hmmm...didn't think about it that way.  If so, I've got no problem with our government sinking that fucking thing.

I'm surprised, but I find myself in agreement with The True Idiot - if you want to leave for someplace you think is better - fuck off and go.

I don't see how that's any worse than Obama leaving our borders wide open for any terrorist psychopath to walk across.

Be sure to take Bezerk Fury too before we decide to hit it with a Cruise Missile.

So it's OK because they all did it? Good thing Obama didn't run a campaign on the promise of change or anything of the sort.

We'll send you instead.  You can be the socialist missile that brings down the libertarian island.

Then you can rename it:  Give-me-whatever-the-fuck-I-want-whenever-the-fuck-I-want-it-but-don't-take-my-money island.

Kinda catching...

Not at all!

Com on man you know how I feel about illegal immigration  ::)

But just singling out Obama is whacked.  Every president after Reagan has whored themselves out to the Latino vote.

I wouldn`t mind that at all actually.  I`d only use it as a vacationing spot though.

LOL reminds of water world with kevin costner...

whats funny is that they bill this as an experiment for libertarianism ::)

LOL going somewhere were only like minded ppl are going to be and acting like that is somehow going to be relevant to countries where there are many different views.

I think this becomes a gimmicky resort, if it ever gets built.
