As I said, this is planned for US domestic politics;

Elections are nearing, campaigning runs already... Obama needs something to make him look like a national hero. What's better than saving two Americans from evil Iranians who American people hate (though most even don't know where this particular country is located) ?

This gives Obama also chance to appear as a negotiating president. He won't use brutal force, because he can't but also to prove his more discreet policy is the right choice. Watch. They won't be held 8 years in Iran.

it sucks for the americans... but at the same time, when you knowingly enter a spot in the world you know to be run by crazies, you know what you're getting into.

Whether they are spies or just clueless hikers, they went to one of the most dangerous and closely controlled places in the world.  You don't just wake up one day in southern california and decide iran would be nice this tiem of year.  it took a lot of money and effort just to get there - you'd think they would have done their research into the local laws.
