The issue is not whether something is good or bad for you but who should decide. Of course, minors do not and should not have the same rights as adults. Children in Cali and here in Hawaii stay out in the sun -- the real sun -- all day long. For hours and hours at a time. Some, like I did when I was a kid, get sun burn. Should we now have a law that limits the time kids can be on the beach? They have to go trough a turnstile and punch a time clock?

I'm all for education and moral persuasion. But when it comes to using the force of the law -- which essentially comes down to "Do what we say or we will fine you, don't pay the fine we will arrest and imprison you, resist imprisonment and we will hurt you and even kill you if necessary" we should be very circumspect in giving them even more power to control our lives.

The health benefits of the sun are valid, however where I live we have too much exposure to the sun and no ozone layer.  Everything in moderation they say.

Exactly! That's why I wonder if this recent discovery of the rampant deficiency of Vit D has to do with people avoiding the sun. Do you really think we were meant to get virtually NO sun exposure. Doesn't make sense to me. I remember reading as a kid about the Olympic athletes in the Soviet Union. Part of their training was to get 20 minutes exposure to sun lamps twice a week. There's not much sun in Russia and the Soviets believe in the health benefits of some UV light. I think if anything tanning beds are much safer because you have far greater control of the intensity and exposure time. It has less of the burning rays that the sun has. And people are busy. They work during the day and there's no guarantee that there will be sun on the weekends. So if the choice is between no sun exposure or a tanning bed once or twice a week I think tanning beds serve a very useful purpose.

Well firstly, I think that tanning beds are less intense than those stand up ones.  The stand up ones here go for 3/6 and 9 min intervals.  So if I had a choice to absolutely no sunlight or ten mins in a tanning bed, I would probably choose the tanning bed twice per week only because when I lived in Melbourne the winters would make me feel quite down and so I know I need ultravoilet rays to keep me feeling happy mentally. 
Obviously it depends on where you live in the world because someone who was in a very cold climate and did not see much of the sun would probably benefit from a tanning bed, where as where I live we need to actually get out of the sun.  I wear 30+ on my face/neck and chest all year round every single day.  I do not lay out in the sun here in summer, in fact I avoid it at all costs...even do my cardio at 4.45am so to avoid the strong rays.  By 6.30am here in summer you can't be out in the sun...it's just too hot and intense.  I do however lay out in the sun during the winter months here, but I still protect my face/neck and chest.
