Socialism is alive and well in many countries specifically the Scandinavian countries.  The difference is they don't have pure socialism and they don't have big bloated corrupt governments.  They are small countries that are rich in natural resources.  Take Norway for example, they/the people/government own 70% of their natural resources.  the other 30% are allowed to be controlled and owned by private entities i.e. capitalists.  The Norwegian government uses the profits from these natural resources to fund their social programs adn the welfare of their country/citizens.  In Norway you don't have to worry about getting old.  In America we have to save for retirement the minute we come out of the birth canal.  The strongest most prosperous nations right now are those that have embraced a mixed economy with a little bit of capitalism mixed in with a little bit of socailism.

Take a look at Europe. The EU and a number of other countries outside it are completely insolvent. The welfare state model does not work. Using Norway as a reference is a stupid fucking concept as they're in a great position due to their oil reserves. Sweden is about all you've got.
