Obama Jokes at Jobs Council: 'Shovel-Ready Was Not as Shovel-Ready as We Expected'

President Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness met today in Durham, NC at Cree Inc., a company that manufactures energy-efficient LED lighting. One of the Council's recommendations to President Obama was to streamline the federal permit process for construction and infrastructure projects. It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for "months to years ... and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned ... I'm sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act your staff briefed you on many of these challenges." At this point, Obama smiled and interjected, "Shovel-ready was not as ... uh .. shovel-ready as we expected." The Council, led by GE's Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter.

The Obama administration promised the Recovery Act ("the stimulus") would prevent the jobless rate from going over 8%. It now stands at 9.1%.

Don't know about lives - but it definately cost us a ton of jobs, debt, inflation, bloated govt payrolls, etc.

I'm glad you think obama laughing along with Immelt over this is a hoot, not to mention that the company where this took place got 40 million in stim bill money and offshored 50% of its production to China.

Good job bro.

Don't know about lives

Surely the number of suicides has increased?  workplace shootings from layoffs?  people starving to death or being poisoned from eating cat food?

I know it's easy for libs like you to quickly dismiss the human costs of the Obama policy, but I'm not so quick to do so.  His policies led to an increase of 1.5 million canine deaths per year (Levin show).  It's a safe bet a lot of people have lost their lives thanks to the stim package - but socialist leninist viking conquistador marxists don't wanna talk about that, now do yall?  ;)

In Speech On Tough Times For Americans, Obama Brags 'I Have Better Plane' And 'Bigger Entourage' Than Three Years Ago

By Mark Finkelstein | June 13, 2011 | 17:04

________________________ ________________________ _______-

Imagine a Republican president giving a speech on tough economic times in which he claimed that the plight of Americans who are hurting is what is on his mind every day as he walks to the Oval Office. Imagine that same Republican president, in that same speech, bragging that he has "a better plane" and "a bigger entourage" than when he was a candidate.  Now imagine the howls from the MSM about such president's vainglory and insensitivity.

President Obama gave just such a speech today.  Speaking at a plant in North Carolina about the tough economic times, PBO claimed that "what drives me every day as I walk down to the Oval Office" is the need to find jobs and economic security for everyone.

But Obama opened his speech by bragging that "I have a better plane" than when he visited the same plant three years ago as a presidential candidate.  Later, in explaining that he had brought the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness with him to North Carolina, Obama boasted "I travel with a bigger entourage" than he did as a candidate.

View video after the jump.

So, will we see the MSM jump on PBO's callous braggadocio?  Come on.  We all know that the liberal media is part of the president's entourage.

P.S., Mr. President.  You don't "have" a better plane.  You fly in one. The American people put Air Force One at your disposal of the president--for so long as you occupy the office.

BARACK OBAMA: I actually visited this plant about three years ago.  I was still running for office.  Somebody in the plant showed me a picture of the two of us together. And I looked so much younger then. But, ah, so it's true I've got a lot more gray hair now than I did the last time I visited, but, I have a better plane, so it's a fair trade . . . I will not be satisfied till everyone who wants a good job that offers security has a good job that offers security. I won't be satisfied till the empty storefronts in town are open for business again.  I won't be satisfied till working families feel like they're moving forward again, that they're progressing again. That's what drives me every day as I walk down to the Oval Office . . . We got everything we need to help our workers adapt, and to help our fellow Americans through this tough period. But it's going to take all of us working together. The private sector, government, not-for-profits, academia.  And that's what I came back to talk about today. I brought some folks with me.  You know, I travel with a bigger entourage than I did three years ago.  So the group I brought today is called the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

Obama jokes about 'shovel-ready projects'
By David Jackson, USA TODAY
Updated 15m ago

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2011/06/obama-jokes-about-shovel-ready-projects/1

President Obama cracked wise about one of his administration's early catchphrases.

Remember "shovel-ready projects."

Those were construction projects in the 2009 stimulus bill that were supposed to get moving right away -- but jobs council members told Obama today that some got held up because of elaborate government regulations and permitting procedures.

"Shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected," Obama said.

In both the jobs council meeting and in his speech later to employees at a Durham lighting company, Obama said regulatory change is a major part of his new jobs push.

"How do we deal with making sure our regulations make sense, so that we start eliminating ones that don't work, aren't making consumers better off or aren't improving our quality of life?" Obama told the employees.

Republicans said Obama's "shovel-ready" comment is more proof of the shortcomings on his economic policies.

"He's a couple of years behind the rest of America," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "But it's refreshing that the president himself is now acknowledging the failure of his stimulus program."

Obama jokes about his own incompetence (We are NOT amused)
American Thinker ^ | 06/14/2011 | Rick Moran

________________________ ________________________ _____________

The president's Council on Jobs and Competitivenes held a meeting in Durham, NC on Monday and the president was in excellent spirits.

He even told a joke highlighting his own incompetence:

President Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness met today in Durham, NC at Cree Inc., a company that manufactures energy-efficient LED lighting. One of the Council's recommendations to President Obama was to streamline the federal permit process for construction and infrastructure projects. It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for "months to years ... and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned ... Of course they laughed. If you made the world's absolute silliest light bulb, you'd laugh at a joke from the guy who made it illegal to compete with you too.

As for the unemployed and the American taxpayer, who are suffering because of this man's gross incompetence, I don't think they find much to be amused about.

1.9 Million Fewer Americans Have Jobs Today Than When Obama Signed Stimulus
Tuesday, June 14, 2011
By Matt Cover

http://cnsnews.com/news/article/after-28-months-stimulus-spending-19-mil

(CNSNews.com) – Twenty-eight months after Congress passed President Obama’s signature economic stimulus law, and nearly one year after he declared the summer of 2010 to be “Recovery Summer,” 1.9 million fewer people are employed.

In February 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that 141.7 million people were employed. By the end of May 2011 – the last month for which data are available – that number had fallen to 139.8 million, a difference of 1.9 million.

While the number of people with jobs has increased slightly from its low point during the recession – 137.9 million in December 2009 – those 1.9 million jobs have been lost despite $800 billion in stimulus spending.

This does not mean that the economy is not creating jobs, but rather that it is not creating jobs fast enough to keep up with a combination of layoffs and people entering the job market for the first time.

In a Washington Post op-ed, former White House chief economist Larry Summers noted that the percentage of the population that has a job has not improved, even though the economy is technically in recovery.

“From the first quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2011, the U.S. economy’s growth rate averaged less than 1 percent a year,” Summers wrote. “The fraction of the population working remains almost exactly at its recession trough, and recent reports suggest that growth is slowing.”

The fraction of the population with a job has in fact fallen in the 28 months since Congress passed the stimulus – down from 60.3 percent in February 2009 to 58.4 percent in May 2011.

The economy cannot create jobs fast enough to keep pace with layoffs and recent high school and college graduates seeking employment. If the trend continues, as Summers notes may happen, the economy will suffer further in the future as college graduates delay entry into the labor force, reducing their lifetime productivity.

“Beyond the lack of jobs and incomes, an economy producing below its potential for a prolonged interval sacrifices its future,” argued Summers. “Huge numbers of new college graduates are moving back in with their parents this month because they have no job or means of support.”

As both Summers and the BLS data make clear, the economy is not creating new jobs fast enough to make up for layoffs and new graduates, calling into question Obama’s oft-repeated claim that the economy is recovering and creating jobs.

In fact, by citing figures from the first quarter of 2006, Summers is understating the economy’s poor performance. According to BLS data, the number of people with jobs peaked at 146.6 million in November 2007, meaning that over the entire recession – which officially began in December 2007 – the number of people employed has fallen by 6.8 million.

'Shovel-ready was not as . . . uh . . . shovel-ready as we expected," Barack Obama joked the other day at a meeting of his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

Republicans jumped on Obama's comment as insensitive. "He joked about the wildly mistaken predictions he and others at the White House made a couple of years back about the job-creating potential of the stimulus," said Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell. "Well, I don't think the 14 million Americans who are looking for jobs right now find any of this very funny."

I'm sure they don't, but the fact that the president laid an egg when he tried to be self-deprecating isn't the scandal here.

After all, Obama has pretty much said the same thing several times. In a New York Times Magazine profile last October, the president admitted he had to learn the hard way that there's "no such thing as shovel-ready projects."

This is a staggering indictment of the president, the team he assembled, and the journalists who accepted this administration's arrogant assertions that they knew exactly what to do, how to do it, and what would happen as a result. Remember, this is the administration that to this day insists it is "pragmatic" and simply cares about "what works."

"I think we can get a lot of work done fast," President-elect Obama said shortly after a gathering of governors in December 2008. "All of them have projects that are shovel-ready, that are going to require us to get the money out the door."

Jared Bernstein, economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden - the White House's point man on the stimulus - said in a cable-news interview in February 2009: "I think what people need to understand is that this really isn't rocket science." Spend a bundle on public works projects and - boom - you get a lot of people working.

They were wrong.

They were wrong not just about the effect of infrastructure spending - even an analysis by the Associated Press found no evidence unemployment was significantly improved by the Recovery Act's public-works projects - but they were wrong about the existence of shovel-ready jobs in the first place. (They were also misleading, since only a tiny, tiny fraction of the stimulus went to any infrastructure at all. The bulk went to social programs.)

Back in October, when Obama admitted that he had to learn on the job that shovel-ready jobs don't exist, then-governor Ed Rendell (D., Penn.) - a leader in the push for the stimulus - told the New York Times it was all a terrible misunderstanding. "When we said ‘shovel ready' we meant ‘shovel ready' in the way we do things." He added, "I don't think we meant to be deceptive."

You've got to love the "I don't think" there.

The "way we do things" involves endless paperwork, union regulations, environmental red tape, and the like. That's why it only took 410 days to build the Empire State building and 16 months to build the Pentagon but nearly 20 years to complete Boston's Big Dig. Lord knows how long it will be for the government to finish work on Ground Zero.

The point is that the president and his team came into office insisting that they were on top of things and above mere ideological considerations. When confronted with skepticism about the existence of "shovel-ready" projects, they in effect rolled their eyes and scoffed at the backseat drivers.

But they were the ones who were blinded by ideology. One need not be an ideologue to understand that public-works contracting has become bloated and inefficient. Indeed, one must be an ideologue of a certain kind not to understand that. Or one has to be incredibly naive. Or both.

Perhaps that's why Obama's real economic agenda never changed to fit the economic crisis. During the campaign he promised to reform health care and fight for a green economy. After the financial crisis, the "pragmatist" stuck to his outdated agenda, saying - surprise! - what the economy needs is the same agenda he promised before. So while he kept saying he was obsessed with job creation, he spent all of his political capital on health-care reform and energy. All the while, the White House tries to spin its agenda as something it's not.

For instance, you know where this jobs-council meeting took place? At Cree Inc., an LED lightbulb maker. Under the supposedly jobs-boosting stimulus, Cree received $5.2 million. According to Recovery.gov, that $5.2 million created 3.02 jobs. That's $1,716,171 per job.

There's a funny joke in there somewhere, but I don't think Obama wants to tell it.

US DOE Inspector General Testifies: "Energy stimulus program plagued by problems"
Watts Up With That ^ | 1102-2011 | Don Penim
Posted on November 3, 2011 2:09:20 AM EDT by Robert A. Cook, PE

U.S. Department of Energy official testifies to committee:

Energy stimulus program plagued by problems

The Department of Energy’s inspector general said Wednesday that the 2009 stimulus program for green energy was so at odds with the realities on the ground that it was akin to “attaching a lawn mower to a fire hydrant.”

Inspector General Gregory Friedman, testifying to the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s panel on stimulus oversight, outlined a range of problems, from a flood of $35 billion in stimulus money that overwhelmed the department’s $27 billion annual budget to weatherization programs of such shoddy quality that more than half of those audited failed inspection because of substandard workmanship.

Elliot Lewis, assistant inspector general for the Labor Department, told the panel that problems also plagued training programs for green jobs that were allocated nearly $500 million. Of the roughly 125,000 workers eligible for training, only 40 percent received it and only 8,035 participants landed jobs.
