t’s a common complaint—we’ve certainly made it over the years—that too much political campaign coverage focuses on the horse race. The packed debate schedule in the current GOP nomination battle has put a bit more focus than usual on the substance of what the candidates are saying, which is good. But even so, most of this coverage has wound up being about whether a given policy position might help or hurt a candidate’s chances of winning. What’s most important has been left largely unexamined: if one of these candidates actually becomes president and advances his or her policies, what would be the consequences for the nation?

Part of the reason this question is seldom addressed is that it’s genuinely hard to do; it requires thinking three steps ahead and accounting for numerous variables. But there’s also a widespread assumption that extreme positions taken in the primaries will fade in the general election as candidates “move to the center,” and will disappear entirely once the serious business of governing begins. Surely President Newt Gingrich would not get rid of child labor laws. Surely President Perry would not seek to eliminate three cabinet departments.

We don’t think that this year, with this GOP, those assumptions are warranted. And so we asked a distinguished group of reporters and scholars to think through the hitherto unthinkable: What if one of these people actually wins

is it because you worked for decades to build US military might, and he is wanting to just walk away from that hard-fought position overnight?  not flaming, hh6 - I'm being serious here. 

I see younger soldiers like garebear love Ron paul, and they obiously donate - he's #1 with soldiers yet again and just cleared 13 mil in total donations this Q.

Is that why?  You love the USA strong military presence in the world, and he's hating on that?   Again hh6, i'm being serious and would love your answer here to learn the diff between older and younger military folks with RP.

Why...because I live in the real world. RP cannot walk away from our commitments world wide. We're doing that know and the Middle East is falling apart. 1# with soldiers.....yeah. I still don't know anybody voting for him..or see RP bumper stickers. Why is there a divide between younger and older....because I suspect the younger ones aren't really interested in deploying...doing their job...or have the best interest of the country at heart. That comes with age and experience.

great answer.  i can respect that.  you may very well be right, as you know more about the military world than I do.
If you don't mind answering - aside from overall security goals of the USA - would ron paul's policies screw up your life personally (retirement military money or benefits, etc)?  Or is he just planning on phasing it out as people retire?  Cause if Ron Paul said he planned on cutting getbig political boards, I would probably hate his ass too.  My Q is if he is directly affecting your own lot, or if you just don't like the overall policy for longterm US interests?

No...say he did it. It would not affect me personally at all. He'd grandfather retirement and start the savings and cuttings in 2014 or 2015 based on some plan. But any cuts have to go through Congress. Every slot is mandated by Congress. Every promotion board has to be certified by Congress yearly...so my primary zone look for LTC is FEB 2013. I expect I'll make it. I don't like his foreign policy because despite how much we retreat, whether its him or Obama or whoever...we'll be forced to come back out...like 911 and that causes lives, recessions, money and all the rest that we've seen over the last 10 plus years.

Case in point...right now Pakistan has shut down our supply lines into Afganistan. Currently all the stuff leaving the country, post surge, is leaving through the stans while supplies are coming in on trucks...massive amounts of trucks, through Pakistan. This was the primary reason Bush did exactly what he did from 2001-2008. He knew we could not afford to be cut off. Pakistan has done this before..but never like this, and it looks like it may continue. My unit will be responsible for all this crap once I deploy so I sit through very long and extremely dry briefs on this crap. Right now we're running out of all the nice to haves. Soon it will be a real problem. We're flying in all the neccesary supplies, this is costing us millions. Obama decided he was going to drone the shit out of Pakistan...cheaper, makes him look like a bad ass...well thats pissed off the Pakistani's..so drones, Bin Laden raid..and everything else has caused major problems for Pakistan..amd now for us. We can't afford knee jerk reactions, half assed plans....and unilateral pull-outs. The wheels are coming off the wagon everywhere.
