LIFTING & CARDIO
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:52:52 AM »
So here's the question, after a 5 - 6month hiatus from the gym, i started back about 2 weeks ago. My initial intent was to start with a week of cardio, i would go on an empty stomach and take my ECA prior. After a few days i had to start hitting the weights, but i am still doing my cardio, just not as much. i have  little more than an hour to spend in the gym, i need to drop some pounds, a trainer said i should split my weight training and cardio 50/50. Also should i eat prior to going being that i am lifting?

Weights are the most important part of the equation. Cardio is a good tool for weight loss but not essential. Though if you are out of shape i'd say definetly keep doing it, specially if you enjoy it. If i were you I would have a small meal before the gym (i tend to have 3 eggs and a piece of toast) as this can keep energy up but not bloat you or make you feel weighed down. I definetly find that personally I cannot consume a lot of carbs pre-workout as I just feel tired. Also a banana or some grapes seems to work well.

Just make sure you eat a decent nutritious meal after - I tend to consume the majority of my days calories after i workout (around 1500) and 500 beforehand. I fast all day and I feel great :).

Also ditch protein shakes if you are using them, just stick to whole foods and don't over think things. Protein shakes just made me feel shit and gave me digestive problems, waste of money imo.
