Working Full Time & Being Full Time Student
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:59:39 PM »
Anyone else work 40 hours/week and go to school full time (12+ credit hours)?

I've been in school 3 years and have lifted consistently.  Began to diet and I noticed a drop in motivation to learn.  I stopped dieting & lifting 3 weeks ago and ended the quarter strong.

Anyways, how did you guys train + diet + excel in school?

I'm thinking about dropping lifting altogether for awhile and focus on diet + school to just get lean.

dieting makes you lose motivation for everything. I would not diet to cut while in school.

I've done it before. Most of my workouts were very early morning, about 5-530.

You have to get it done early or you will be so exhausted by the end of the day that it won't be an option.

I had no social life while it was happening, though.

Good luck! (no homo)

I'm in my second year of doing this. I work 48 hr weeks and am studying my bsc in health science full time. I leave the house at 4:30am, get home at 10pm and fit everything in between (training/work/school/girlfriend/friends) pretty much in that order..

It's tough, but if anything was to go it would have to be training/gym, and i don't think i could ever let that happen..

Motivation is everything bro, not everyone (or even the majority) could keep it up, that's what makes you awesome :)

Makes it even funnier when fat drunk slobs complain about how hard their 9-5 mon-fri lives are..
i trust me

Dude,
trust me  on this - commit to your studies and  just train where  you can. I'm 40, just finishing up my post grad studies, work average 60 hrs  per week and at this age  it is a lot harder than back in my day. My wife is currently finishing off her law degree (few months to go) and  working fulltime as well - and has little time for anything else - she's mid thirties. All I can say is I wish I had studied more when I was younger and let the training slide. A couple of years off training hard out isn't going to hurt.

Thanks for the advices.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with this.

When you're that busy you have to prioritize. Sure go to the gym and lift but school and work are your priorities...not trying to get big.

I did it as well and I gained a lot of weight. This last semester I worked 40 hours and dieted for a show so I devided to only do part time class (8 credits) it helped a lot but still a drag.

Just get job and learn on the job.  School is an illusion.  Hek 100% econ departments know nothing fo real economics and purposefully teach big government wakkery.

bodybuilding should be your top priority.  talk to an academic advisor and tell them you need to construct your school around your scheduled leg days.

there are plenty of other jobs you can get to fit your bodybuilding schedule.

Also, you can try buying some home equipment so you can lift at any time. IMO training at home is very underrated

BTw, sounds like lot of work load.

From my experience it seems like the more you do, the more energy you have and better you perform !!
Must be some kind of human coping mechanism.

I would say the best times of my life so far have been those when I've been extremely busy all the time.
when you have more lazy time in your hands, you start to over-complicate everything....

Don't know how you guys do it, I'm seriously impressed. I've started working on a Maths and Statistics degree part time but it's going terrible. Barely halfway through and it's already a slog. Luckily I done my first degree the normal way, e.g, waking up late and dragging myself to class.  :P

I would train twice a week to maintain. The hardest workout on the week end of you have a day off, the other during the week.

Split as such: do antagonist training to save time on this day between chest and back, arms as well.
Chest
Back
Arms

Legs: antagonist training between quads and hams (hard as shit to do) but rest a good minute or 2 between each exercise)
shoulders
calves

ya won't fall appart too bad.But any time off over 4 weeks is real hard to come back after, could not imagine years.

Been doing it for years, and it sucks...but i do it because it has a pay off.  I'm lucky enough to work in a talent industry (broadcasting), so I've been able to make a good living.  Honestly, I think school is overrated, but it is a necessity in society.  I enjoy what I study, but you're either born with/without common sense and ability.  The rest is just motivation.

I did for sophomore and junior years. I also commuted 2 1/2 hours sophomore and sophomore summer.  Just take a weight lifting classes. You needed 3 hours or so anyway.
