I do not watch much TV. When I do, my "cultural antennae" are always up. I've encountered the following stereotypes en masse:
- Hot, beautiful women kicking multiple full grown men's asses....usually a choreographed fight with the woman at the end unmarred and in some half-provocative pose.
- Blacks always being portrayed as a professional such as a lawyer, doctor, engineer, scientist, or a high-ranking official. They are always smart and intelligent. Movies and TV shows always seem to want to stick a few black actors/actresses in almost everything, even if the locale makes no sense(like Maine or Nova Scotia)
- In commercials, the white guy ALWAYS gets shown up by his minority or female counterpart. The white guy is always portrayed as weak, awkward, weird, and unsure of himself whereas the minority/female looks sharp and often looks down on the white guy for being so stupid.
- Major villains are nearly exclusively white, along with their henchmen. Look at the Matrix movies, for instance. Not a SINGLE bad guy was non-white.
This is not necessarily anger on my part, but a curiousity. Why are these stereotypes so prevalent nowadays?
