I disagree with some of it. It's not that we are "promised" a beautifully woman, it's that we are attracted to them them, and many can't figure out why such and such woman doesn't want us.
And women can't figure out why ugly men try hitting on them---when they only want a certain type---the fact is, women can't choose who they attract...

And the stories of men gettig the beautiful woman go back hundreds and thousands of yrs...usually the storie is complete with the handsome man doing feats of strength, outthinking a far larger or smarter opponent, or saving the said beauty from a humiliating demise of marrying an "ugly" mean man.

Basically the point is---handsome, well built man, gets beautiful girl by doing selfless acts---putting himself in danger.

Thing is, that doesn't work in this age. Women have killed chivalry, and just by doing some selfless act, you are not gauranteed the "keys to the kingdom"...

Yes handsome hero gets girl, but also ugly shrek, and coward Wall-E and dorky Potter, poor Aladdin.. Every  protagonist gets good looking girl. Must have fucked up some expectations being hypnotized visually and audially from movies. But yeah, of course nothing is new under the sun.
