Driver who ran over golf cart sentenced
« on: April 05, 2012, 10:25:18 AM »
COLLIER COUNTY, FL -
The man who ran over a golf cart filled with people, then fled the scene was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday.

Michael Joyner pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of a crash, reckless driving and evidence tampering in January.

He faced up to five years in prison as part of a plea deal.

Back in 2010 Joyner drove his SUV into a golf cart at the Ace Group Classic Golf Tournament in Naples-- seriously injuring three people, and left the scene.

Joyner later said he left the scene because of a panic attack-- but knew help was on the way for the victims.

The prosecution argued Joyner was only looking out for himself and should be punished for a bad decision.

Judge Hardt sentenced Joyner to four years in prison and five years probation.

Joyners' family was in tears as he was taken into custody.

The prosecution says they are pleased with the outcome.
