I’m “suspending” my campaign.
Why do politicos always say this? No one ever announces that they are quitting; they are always “suspending” their campaign. What’s up with that? Is it because only losers “quit” and no one wants to be perceived as a loser?
Reason 1:
MoneyIf they terminate their campaign, they can only raise funds to retire outstanding debt the campaign has incurred. However, by suspending their campaign, they can continue to raise and spend funds -- they will even continue to receiving matching federal funds, if they had qualified for them previously and hadn't opted out.
Reason 2:
DelegatesBy suspending the campaign, they still hold on to delegates they've already won -- an important consideration come nomination time. Delegates mean power at the convention. If they terminate, some of those delegates will be up for grabs. (This isn't entirely accurate: it only applies to certain classes/types of delegates)
