In Australia I was a naturopath for 11 years - I had to do 4 years of nutrition and dietetics in my studies, but I was a psychologist before that, so had the luxury of working in a pretty specialised field. I had my own practice in which I spent about 50% of my time - I worked almost exclusively with kids (and their parents) who had been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and learning disorders.

The other 50% of the time I was doing corporate health workshops and was also contracted to a small pharmacy chain where I was developing their health programmes - to try and give them a unique selling point in a very crowded cut priced marketplace.

I averaged from $95000 - $125000 Aussie dollars a year (gross), paid a lot back in tax and then put half the remainder back into the practice.

The clinical work was really interesting but I got sick of the parents not wanting to take responsibility after awhile. The corporate work was great and paid really well, but usually saw you splitting your day because most of it would take place at lunchtime. The pharmacy work was disappointing because I thought the concept was strong, but the average pharmacist was the most conservative breed of professional I've ever come across. As soon as I got down to store level to oversee the implementation of the programmes I knew I was pushing shit uphill.

It paid very well though.

The last 4 years in Germany I've been teaching Japanese taiko drumming and some martial arts and living off my wife! Much more relaxed here, gotta say.
