A neighbor had one, and my parents almost bought one when I was a kid. Really nice nice dog, but it didn't strike me as a little kid dog, in that it didn't like people being grabby with it, but other than that, it was a cool dog. It would make a nice older boys dog or active person's dog.

The one that lived down the street loved to run and fetch, and just be out and about. Didn't like to be cooped up, it always wanted something to do.

They are highly intelligent and very active.  They need A LOT of mental and physical exercise.  Tossing a ball and playing fetch won't cut it.  They're PERFECT for agility courses.  Wouldn't be fair to the animal if you're not committed to giving them what they need.  They will try to herd anything that moves including children.

Very cool coats and eyes too.

They are great family dogs. They love attention and they love to work, you can train them very easily.
They have some traits bred into them that can be weird sometimes, like chasing bikes and biting the tires
while they are spinning. I read that it is trying to round up the bike like a horse (they nip at the horses heels
to get them to go where they want them to go).
Mine would try to be aggressive to each other, but it was more of a joke than anything, you'd hear growling and
barking as if something was being murdered, but when the dust settled, it was just two idiot dogs covered in each
others saliva with zero flesh wounds.

My brother had one.  It was an excellent watch-dog as it minded his property.  Friendly, but not the jumping up on you/trying to hump your leg type.  Was also able to train it to perform quite a few tricks.

My dog is about 1/2 Kelpie, which are used in Aus for sheep herding.  About 1/4 Blue Heeler, which is a cattle herding breed.  The other 1/4 is a mishmash of german shepherd, dingo, maybe corgi, and who knows what.

The 3/4 herding breeds made him very energetic when young.  These dogs love to run and need to do it for extended periods every day over open ground for about 10 years.  A walk on a leash around the block wouldn't even begin to cut it like it would for more traditional house breeds.  They're also dogs that need a lot of mental stimulation and don't do well being closed up in a house all day with nothing going on.  I take mine to work everyday but most people can't do that.  Only other downside is that you're probably going to get your heels nipped first thing in the morning while shuffling to the coffee pot for at least a month.

As mentioned in the thread already, they're very clever and pick up training well.  Mine is very loyal even by canine standards, preferring to be alongside and around the day's goings on.  Heelers tend to be heavier set and a little mellower in personality while Kelpies are more lithe and less laid back.
