Romney: Drastic cuts to teachers & first responders
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:48:01 PM »
He's right, economically.  But I didn't think any politician had the balls to admit he will cut these jobs by removing the funding that pays for them.  He doesn't have to cut the jobs - he just cuts the funding for them lol.

Yesterday Mitt Romney claimed that it was “ completely absurd” of the Obama campaign to argue that he favors cutbacks in cops, firefighters and teachers. “The federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or policemen,” Romney said, adding that they were paid by states and localities.

What’s getting lost in the back and forth here is that Romney’s actual economic plan would, in fact, cut billions of dollars in federal money that goes to cops, firefighters, and teachers — perhaps more than $10 billion a year, in fact.

This is the conclusion of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which analyzed Romney’s plan through the prism of the debate over public workers at my request.

As Michael McAuliff reported yesterday, despite Romney's claim, the federal government does give billions of dollars to states and localities through programs like Title 1, the COPS program, FEMA and others — which pay for first responders and teachers.

All he has to do is take a cue from Scott Walker, and he'll be fine.

Actually, Romney wants to give tax breaks to everyone and wants to cut expenses where it's not needed.

There are plenty of teachers who are overpaid and are bad at their job. That is why public unions need to go.

First Responders get paid enough. They don't need anymore than they are getting now.

If their wages keep increasing beyond what is sensible, who is going to pay for it? How is it going to be paid? Through taxes. Even those that earn less than $250k will have to pay more in taxes.

the fck?

many of their salaries are paid for with federal grants.

originally, romney scoffed that these workers were a state issue.
of course, it took all of 5 mintues for pundits to point out that HUGE amounts of federal dollars are used by states for this.

When romney cuts that money - a shitload of them are going to lose their jobs.  It's undeniable.

That is EXACTLY what is happening right now.

The same way millionaires living in connecticut are paying for the missile defense system to protect broke people living in cabins in wyoming.

The same way a person making a good living in rural TX is paying for homeland security to protect the homeless guy who lives in target-rich NYC.
