Only 70% Of Americans Agree With The Declaration Of Independence
Esther Zuckerman, The Atlantic Wire    | Jul. 4, 2012, 3:59 PM | 644 | 11

A majority of Americans agree with the Declaration of Independence's statement “governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed," according to a survey from Rasmussen Reports. That's good, right?

Well, if you look at it the way Dan Amira at New York's Daily Intel did, it's actually kind of shocking. Whereas Rasmussen focused on the positive in their headline, "Americans Still Agree With Declaration of Independence," Amira went for "Disturbingly Large Number of Americans Don't Agree with Declaration of Independence." So, it's all about perspective.

According to the national survey of 1,000 adults, 70 percent of Americans concur with that central tenet of our nation's founding text. That means that 13 percent disagree (who are you?!) and 17 percent are undecided (again, who are you!?!). The real question is, What are those people doing for their awkward day off tomorrow?

But in good news: the number of people who agree with the Declaration is up from last year's 66 percent and 2008's 58 percent. Happy birthday, America! At least 70 percent of us will be celebrating tomorrow.

My guess is that those 30% don't even know what the declaration of independence is or even understand what  “governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed," even means.

The Declaration was written at a time where you could shoot 1 bullet a minute, when my ancestors were in the field picking cotton and getting a whip across their backs...

So personally, I really don't give a shit about the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution because what's on paper doesn't reflect what reality is

I am very thankful that you are a homo and therefore will not reproduce. Your stupidity is astounding ( even for this message board).

The human race owes you a debt of gratitude.

This ^

Though I think those words are becoming less and less true as government gets bigger and more pervasive.

And you think unaccomplished and incompetent leftists and communists like Obama Piglosi and the other pieces of trash have more wisdom than the founders as how to craft a society?

Typical.

As good government is an empire of laws, how shall your laws be made? In a large society, inhabiting an extensive country, it is impossible that the whole should assemble to make laws. The first necessary step, then, is to depute power from the many to a few of the most wise and good.

Fear is the foundation of most governments; but it is so sordid and brutal a passion, and renders men in whose breasts it predominates so stupid and miserable, that Americans will not be likely to approve of any political institution which is founded on it.

He is talking about the republican party here ;)

As to Taxes, they are evidently inseparable from Government. It is impossible without them to pay the debts of the nation, to protect it from foreign danger, or to secure individuals from lawless violence and rapine.

Alexander Hamilton, Address to the Electors of the State of New York, March, 1801

Who knew the founding fathers actually approves of taxes

That's not true, most of us on this board for example are strongly against illegal immigration but we were also against Arizonians new Immigration Law.
