Mr. Romney’s Financial Black Hole

The New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/11/opinion/mitt-romneys-financial-black-hole.html?_r=1

"SNIP.................... ....................

Though the Romney campaign has often distanced itself from Bain’s recent corporate takeover work, voters have no way of knowing how much the candidate has received from Bain since he left, or how much is coming.

Firms like Bain park money in the Caymans because the islands have no taxes on capital gains, profits or income for foreigners. But just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

The campaign says Mr. Romney has received no tax benefits from his offshore shelters, a dubious assertion but one impossible to check without more disclosure. Mr. Romney said this week that he had no idea where the blind trust had put his money, and he dismissed the issue of the offshore investments, saying they were no more consequential than investing in a foreign car company.

A foreign investment, however, is not the same as an offshore tax shelter. A more conscientious politician would have urged his blind trusts to have nothing to do with shelters not available to the general public. And Mr. Romney is tarnishing an important political tradition — one set by his father, George Romney, who released 12 years of tax returns in 1967 — by continuing to keep the sources of his income in the shadows.

What do you expect when you have a guy who's had 8% unemployment or higher for forty-two straight months, got us downgraded for the first time ever, had 9% unemployment or higher for 33 months, and put the biggest tax hike on the middle class in U.S. history?

"The campaign says Mr. Romney has received no tax benefits from his offshore shelters"

Why would you use an off-shore shelter, if not to enjoy a tax benefit?

I guess I don't know if I believe romney didn't get ANY tax benefits, particularly after he was caught in this lie about having no affiliation with Bain from 99-02.

There are 4 reasons to have an offshore account - from WIKI.   Tell me which of these 1) makes sense for romney and 2) doesn't hurt him politically?

greater privacy (see also bank secrecy, a principle born with the 1934 Swiss Banking Act)
low or no taxation (i.e. tax havens)
easy access to deposits (at least in terms of regulation)
protection against local, political, or financial instability

again, i'm not attacking romney for using these very legal options.

if he LIES about it, or attempts to HIDE this info, then he's up for the same criticism you issued obama for not releasing things like college records.

I don't understand why we allow ANY politician to not release LIFETIME financial records.  I mean, you could pick 20 politicians most likely to win POTUS in the next 20 years... you could bribe them all with a million bucks cash... and you'd have an "in" to the white house no matter who won for the next 2 decades, worth way more than that.

I thought CLinton had to release all his overseas $ financial dealings to make sure hilary wasn't influenced.  We don't know where the hell romney's money came from for all those years - that's a little scary.

Look at this is way, 33... Obama HAS released the last 12 years' worth of financial records.  We know how he made every cent for the last 12 years.  Romney?  Not a clue past last year.

If the roles were reversed, and we had the last 12 years of Romney tax records, and obama reluctantly released ONE year, you'd be screaming from the rooftops ;)

Romney should release them and tell people like yourself, and the leftists you worship, that he is protecting his money from vultures and locusts like yourself and politicians you vote for who will steal the money and piss it away on welfare thugs and crony socialism.

He should tell people that he legally got his taxes to as low as possible since he wants to leave the money to his family instead of giving it to your God King and your fellow socialist scumbags to waste.

This is all you got? Seriously? Everyday people are NOT talking about this whole Bain thing. The only ones talking about it are the MSM trying to get the gullible, lowest rung voter who can't think for himself...cough...cough. .YOU..and idiots on this board. Most people are talking about a lack of jobs, a terrible economy and a President who has divided this country like no other before him. If this is the best the Obama campaign has, they are in real trouble in November...seriously.

Doesn't matter if they are desperate.  The ads are working and Romney's numbers are falling.  They are basically using an issue that Romney has refused to answer during the GOP debates and the nomination.

Romney can say what he wants but he created the situation with not releasing his tax forms.  He needs to do what his father did many years ago and just release them.  Its just getting ugly as Fox News and even the governer of Alabama of all places is demanding him to do so.

Wrong...they are rising....winning in all but 2 swing states, all polls have him winning, Intrade has him the likely victor.....and worse of all....no indication of Romney moving up whatsoever

In Rasmussen, they're tied at 45 with Obama merely ahead by two (effectively tied) in Gallup.

That doesn't sound like rising to me. All of Obama's leads are well within the margin of error (meaning they're effectively tied). And, that does not take into account the undecideds.
