Attacking Family Members
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:27:28 PM »
Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen claimed Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life," despite the fact she raised five boys.  Now the DNC runs an ad ridiculing Ann Romney's horse that she uses to treat her multiple sclerosis.   Classless.  At the same time, the president claims family members are off limits.  Has the president condemned the attacks on Romney's wife?

Hilary Rosen says Ann Romney never worked 'day in her life'

The presidential campaign exploded Thursday into a bitter debate over women's work, a day after a Democratic adviser made a dismissive remark about stay-at-home mom Ann Romney, wife of the GOP candidate Mitt Romney.

Wednesday night on CNN, Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen said Romney, who raised five now-grown sons, had "never worked a day in her life." Mitt Romney had said earlier that his wife had relayed to him the economic concerns of women around the country. . . .

DNC Pulls Ad Featuring Ann Romney’s Horse
Washington Wire
By Elizabeth Williamson

The Democratic National Committee last night yanked an ad that mocks Mitt Romney’s varying statements about releasing his tax returns by showing footage of a horse performing in the dressage arena.

This undated photo provided by the Romney campaign shows Ann Romney with Rafalca, a mare she co-owns. Rafalca won a spot on the Olympic dressage team, along with trainer Jan Ebeling. The horse is Refalca, co-owned by Ann Romney and trainer Jan Ebeling, who will be riding the 15-year old Oldenburg mare in dressage events at the Summer Olympics in London this month.

This week, Democratic campaign operatives said the horse, which is shown performing a series of balletic moves accompanied by circus music, would star in a series of Obama campaign ads. That changed overnight, though, when ABC News released excerpts of an interview that aired Thursday on Good Morning America showing Mrs.  Romney’s reaction to her horse being used in an attack ad.

Mrs. Romney finds horse riding, and in particular dressage, useful therapy in her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis. Further, President Barack Obama has said that Mrs. Romney, and any of either candidates’ family members, should be off-limits in the campaign.

“Our use of the Romneys’ dressage horse was not meant to offend Mrs. Romney in any way, and we regret it if it did,” DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse told ABC News, according to an item posted on the outlet’s Web site. “We were simply making a point about Governor Romney’s failure to give straight answers on a variety of issues in this race. We have no plans to invoke the horse any further, to avoid misinterpretation.”

For her part, Mrs. Romney said the ad made her “want to laugh.”

“It makes me laugh—it’s like, really? There’s so many people out of work right now and there’s this guy here that has the answers for fixing the economy,” she said, referring, of course, to her husband.

“All these attacks—they’re going to try everything.”

Horses, Mrs. Romney told GMA host Robin Roberts, “have been my passion in life…they’ve been my companion through my dark hours when I was recovering, and gave me strength, and gave me joy and hope.”
