TAMPA, Fla. — President Barack Obama says his re-election might help end the political stalemate in Washington, much like “popping a blister.” In an interview with Time magazine, Obama says he expects Republicans in Congress to work more cooperatively in a second term, since his re-election would no longer be a factor. The president says he also wants to do a better job of explaining to the public how his policies will help the economy grow. Obama claims he didn’t do a good enough job selling Americans on the stimulus plan

Obama looking for mandate

President Obama is still hoping for a mandate, even though the election is shaping up to be a real squeaker.

In an interview with Time posted on Thursday, he said he hopes such a mandate would push Republicans to be more cooperative, leading to a "popping of the blister" that is gumming up the works in Washington:

[G]iven how stark the choices are, I do think that should I be fortunate enough to have another four years, the American people will have made a decision. And, hopefully, that will impact how Republicans think about these problems.

...I believe that in a second term where Mitch McConnell’s imperative of making me a one-term President is no longer relevant, they recognize what the American people are looking for is for us to get things done.

...[M]y expectation is that there will be some popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice.

The president also explained comments he has made about messaging. Obama has said that one of his biggest mistakes was failing to communicate enough with the American people. He told Time's Michael Scherer that his administration simply didn't have enough time to communicate:

Well, what I meant by that is that we were in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime crisis, so we had to just do stuff fast. And sometimes, it wasn’t popular. And we didn’t have the luxury of six months to explain exactly what we were doing with the Recovery Act, which was basically a jobs act and making sure middle-class families didn’t fall into poverty act.

And there were all kinds of things we could do to have explained that effectively, but we didn’t have time.
