Google confirms 4,000 Motorola Mobility job cuts
The search giant will reduce headcount by around 20 percent in an effort to return the smartphone maker to profitability.
by Zack Whittaker

Google has confirmed that Motorola Mobility will cut 20 percent of its workforce -- around 4,000 people -- and close up to a third of its offices around the world.
The cuts, first reported by The New York Times yesterday, were confirmed by Google earlier today.

"Motorola is committed to helping them (the employees) through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs," Google said in a statement.

Two-thirds of the 4,000 jobs to be cut will be from outside the United States, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission dated August 3.

The company also said in the filing that it plans to "simplify its mobile product portfolio -- shifting the emphasis from feature phones to more innovative and profitable devices."

Google is looking for Motorola Mobility to "return to profitability," the 8-K filing added. Severance charges will run as high as $275 million and are expected to be realized largely in the third quarter, while additional charges relating to the restructuring "could be significant," according to the filing.

The smartphone maker, bought by Google in a $12.5 billion deal that closed earlier this year, said it also plans to cut one-third of its approximately 90 facilities worldwide.

According to New York Times, Motorola Mobility is to reduce its operations in Asia and India and will also focus its research and development efforts in Chicago; Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Beijing.

The company plans to leave unprofitable markets, stop making low-end devices, and focus on a few cell phones instead of dozens, Dennis Woodside, Motorola Mobility's chief executive, told the paper.

Google took over Motorola Mobility following an increase in patent litigation with smartphone makers -- the acquisition saw Google gain more than 17,000 technology patents.

Does one need an MBA to make these decisions?

Motorola makes a dizzying array of phones.  That is to say they currently offer 27 different models—I kid you not.

Here is a tip: less is more.  At the most the company should offer 3-6 different models including  traditional flip phones.  The keyless, screen smartphone is differentiated largely by software.  There should be two of these at the most; two traditional flip phones and two phones with keyboards.  That’s six models right there.

How about Motorola turns into an apple?

Once upon a time there were what apple is today.  They were the first with the flip phone that caused cell phone hysteria.  But they got stuck in the past while everyone else passed them.

A revolution of some kind is definitely coming within 5 years or less. This economy is so fucked right now. Keep buying those canned goods and load up for the long haul. Exercise your right to bear arms, while you're at it.

Really?  Do you have a history of making predictions that eventually come true?  If so, you must be living a very prosperous life by now given all the trends you must have foresaw and capitalized on.  You sound like Harold Camping, the pastor who predicted the end of the world on May 21, 2011.  He also predicted the world would end in 1994; that prediction ruined the lives of many of his followers as they sold their possession in anticipation of his prediction coming true.  ::)

I don't give a shit what I sound like to you. My forecast has nothing to do with any kind of religious sermon. People that would follow a pastor's prediction are sheep and weak-minded, to begin with. I base it on reality and FACTS(your thread topic is just a small minor example). There's a lot of desperate people out there living on hard times despite being educated and experienced. At some point, enough is enough and then the shit really will hit the fan.

Enjoy your lolipops and rainbows and keep living in your bubble. Last to know will be the first to go.

Fair enough.  Let's revisit this thread in five years.  By that time your revolution will have come, and I will look like a consummate fool or the world will continue to turn, and your revolution will still be pending... soon to come in yet another "5 years or less," and you will look like an idiot.

Fair warning: our last getbig fortune teller was fat panda.  We all remember how that turned out.  ::)

Very smart move for Google but bad for those losing their jobs. your going to see the quality of motorola phones greatly improve as google will focus on producing a very limited set of phones (2-3) per year. Why cant people see the leaps and bounds google has made in just the last year compared to apple who has done what recently?
