I and everyone in my bike group have Trek hybrids.  We ride trails, some paved, but mostly small gravel, 12-35 miles at a time ~ . $350-$450.  Go to a small town local dealer.  You may pay a couple bucks more, but will be worth it in the long run.  Also, think about some basic accessories like a computer, lock, car rack, water bottles/holders,  bag... which will add another few hundred to cost.

I've been looking into this a bit as well... I'm thinking about biking to work.  Is there anything to this "commuter" distinction?  Or just marketing bs?

I know literally nothing about bikes.

Not really. Just a hybrid with more comfort features. Sometimes for a commuter they put you in a more upright position for comfort. Not a bad thing if you are not looking for speed.

This is my main ride now. It's a hybrid. Internal hub gears in the rear. Shock in the fork and the seat. Adjustable handle bars with a flick of a lever. Really comfortable ride. A little heavy but great for a bike workout in comfort. Paid about $1000. I use to ride racing type road bikes. I just got sick of being bent over cranking my neck up to see. I also like to ride trails and a skinny tire bike can't do that.  The picture is close to my Cannondale bike.

It's a designation that an urban hipster store uses to add 1k to a bike. Talk to a buddy who knows something about bikes and get his input.

I want to buy a bike to ride around town but not sure what I should get. I will mostly be on roads but probably some rougher surfaces from time to time. I don't want something really expensive but also don't want a piece of junk either...I was thinking probably in the 350 to 500 range. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would highly recommmend this bike to you, currently on sale for $399:

I have been using the above Fuji hybrid to commute to work, 30 miles round trip 4 days per week.

In Nobody-Gives-A-Fuck News.... Yesterday, I upgraded to this:
