I wouldn't smoke it but am curious how legalization would impact people with critical jobs.

weed is awesome...

i use a vaporizer... very little downside (almost no toxins)...

i get high as fuck at times without calories or risks... i mean i can get so high that i cannot stand... i just lay there with one of my dogs licking my face semi-comatose...

agree with that, there are plenty of examples of employers mandating as part of employment that employees not partake in legal activities.

It is legal for ppl to use abstaining from legal activities as part or compensation in contracts so I imagine it would probably take that form for those types of jobs

Well we've had a few articles on here about employers testing for nicotine and denying employment based on tjat.  Dont really know where the courts stand.

If the employee agrees to it as part of their employment they dont really have a leg to stand on. Employee/employer relations are contracts from what I understand, so its no different that one business saying they will only buy material from one vendor. Technically they have the right to buy from anyone but they also have the right to use the ability to abstain from doing it to compensate other parties in a contract.

I'm thinking more along the lines of disability or as Archer77 is pointing out, medical marijuana.  Not sure how to solve that problem or what the courts have said.

Can you tell us how that works?

Are there special clinics you get the pot from?  Do the Feds bother you?  Is it still a 'gray' area?

in canada weed has been decriminalized... tons of folks grow small amounts... it's cheap and plentiful

Do employers test?  Let's say you run heavy equipment, pack chutes, etc.

Weed will never be legalized here in the US. How else will we be able to keep our jails and prisons full, shareholders happy, and law enforcement agencies well-funded and well-supplied with military-grade hardware?

You have to have a medical condition that qualifies you and a doctor who will sign off on it.  I found that I qualified and did it as a lark. In michigan there are dispensaries run by licensed growers where it is available.  The Feds haven't bothered me yet.  They are more likely to go after the dispensaries and growers.

Public opinion may be changing, but I don't think we have really carefully examined how this will play out in every day life (what Skip mentioned).  For example, I doubt most people want a pothead piloting their plane, driving their city bus, taxi, school bus, etc.  The easy answer is to treat it like alcohol, but I'm not sure how easy or difficult it will be to enforce. 

Regarding the workplace, employers should be able to regulate it just like they do any other drug, including alcohol.
