Palumbo's big break...they can hire him on the cheap!

ESPN is laying off as many as 400 employees Tuesday in an effort to boost profit margins, according to reports.

A spokesperson for the Disney-owned network confirmed in an e-mail to Mashable that layoffs were taking place. The spokesperson declined to discuss numbers or details, saying only that the company is "implementing changes... to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs."

"While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive," the spokesperson added.

Yes, I'm sure that's it. Has nothing to with :30 spots that costs $500k and up and pop.

Network television is fucked as soon as the NFL decides to just have some subscription streaming service.  I read somewhere that they would need to charge about $100/season to make it more profitable than their TV deal.

This was purely about a company making a LOT of money (rumored internally to be over $500 million ever other month) wanting even more and getting it at the expense of a lot of people and their lives.

I had no idea ESPN was making over half a billion dollars every other month

Read "Those Guys Have All the Fun"...it has the entire history of ESPN and really how massive an operation they are today. Deadspin and ESPN hate each other so I'm sure any chance to poke them and they will.

I'm not sure why ESPN needs cable TV anymore.  Buy the rights to all professional sports and broadcast everything online through a subscription service.  They would ruin network TV and cable companies all in one swoop.

Now they can get real jobs, like bodybuilding athletes' rep or supplement spokesman.

Chris Berman introducing him as Melvin "Johnny Be" Goodrum when he does commercials for the weak-ass online grocery store.

YouTube where Chris Berman thinks he's of camera and shouts obscenities at everyone. Fake ass fat punk. He acts like he's nice, but that clip shows he's a punk fucker. Someone imbed that shit in this thread, I don't know how from my phone.

they already broadcast "athletic" competitions such as competitive dance, the spelling bee, and the hot dog eating contest...still not desperate enough to broadcast bodybuilding

This will be the future of "tv". Pick, choose, subscribe, stream.
