I recall German government put some heavy subsidies on new cars to boost the sales. I don't know if this program has already ended though.
But yes, German market slumped and in fact Russia already overtook it in monthly sales recently.
Russian oligarkhs (joke) bought 235,000 to 240,000 vehicles in August when Germans bought 214,100 in the same period.

You say Toyota and Vag are shit. OK, but the Russian workman must start somewhere. Is this concept totally strange to you?
There's no accumulated inherited wealth because the 90's took everything people had.
Just to ruin your day, Mercedes too expects 20% growth for their sales in Russia this year.
See how it works, people who have climbed the ladders in society by getting better paying jobs begin to upgrade their vehicles, houses etc.

no, I didn't say that they are shit, I said that they primarily sell beige econoboxes, as in cars like Golfs, Jettas, Corollas, Camrys, etc. Toyotas are more economical and reliable than VWs...
And you have to look at what segments where Mercedes expects to see growth. Is it the entry level, or the mid level (E Class), or the upper level (S Class)? Which segments have grown, and which segments are they low in.
Fact is, where is the home grown Russian market? Was there ever one? Ladas were retooled Fiats.
Depends on who is buying in the US, and what the needs are. Average everyday people who want reliable transportation will go with "beige"---like Camry, Civic, Accord, etc. That is why they are the leaders in their segment.
You have to look at many different factors.
