Job going beautiful.  Already managed to slowly and deathly usher my 'competition' towards the door. Bitch is leaving in November.  This is too fucking easy. I'm lamenting all these years wasted on subpar jobs thinking I'm not good enough and need more knowledge whilst the only requirements were an easy smile, eye contact and willingness to spil blood when needed.  And maybe a drop of ability. Even got some facetime with the CEO yesterday.  Or rather, I was in the same room  :-X

Saw the job on their website and took a stab. Mind you, I spent a whole evening ..... adapting .... my CV to suit my chances for an interview a bit better. Once past HR and getting in the room with someone that actually matters, you're changes increase hugely.  I also primed my references beforehand. And then pure and simple luck I suppose.

I'll tell you what I can do.  If you need these things done then I'll tell you how much I'm going to charge you.  You can then decide if you want me to do these things.  If I do these things, you can decide if you want to pay my price to do the next things, and so forth.  And if you don't then someone else will.  Lots of people need shit done.

If someone tells me to send them a CV I tell 'em I don't have one but they're welcome to write down what I have to say about myself.  Wtf, you're the one asking for help.  You want me to drag you out of the quicksand or not?

People who want CVs, interviews, etc, aren't in a hurry.  They have some need but aren't desperate.  Desperate people pay way more.  You can identify them by the fact that they ask 'Can you...' and 'When/how long...' questions and don't try to fuck you around.  People who have the time to watch you jump through hoops for them are going to pay far less and be a pain in the ass.  Don't work for them.  I'm amazed anyone does.

People applying for positions with their paperwork in hand and shoes shined to impress the guy who needs your help to begin with.  What a weird world some of you inhabit.  Not trying to be an ass.  It's just so foreign to me it makes no sense.

Mgmt jobs have nothing whatsoever to do with any skills (I can completely "out skill" almost every manager I've ever worked for).  It does have everything to do with your clothes, ability to gab, ability to get folks to like you and your ability to challenge EVERYTHING in meetings while quietly being a complete and total yes man to the superiors of those you just challenged.

I've worked for several managers who were very gifted, glorified used car salesmen who really wore a nice suit.....they affected absolutely no positive change whatsoever in the organization but were sly enough to convince others or at least give them the impression they did and consistently and coldy discuss why others didn't.

That's what I've gone and done. And now got the interview  :o

It's for a divisional manager reporting directly to the MD. The only people I've ever 'managed' were sending the trainees to fetch my coffee. I've always been working directly with the clients on site or as part or with the developers.

Any of you ever done it? Took a stab at something and it came off?

In the book "Winning" by Jack Welsh, he states in most jobs, your resume' shouldn't matter. What should matter is the willingness to learn their system and not have a resume that lists multiple jobs in a short time span (paraphrasing).

Yep, yep, yep.....don't have enough fingers and toes to count the times I've experiened it directly or indirectly.  I don't have the ability to do that to other people.....it will limit my career and I'm fine with that.  I care not how that sounds to others.

Jack Welch is my absolute all time favourite CEO. 'Winning' and 'Straight From The Gut' are weekly reads for me. Got them on Kindle, iBooks and hard copy. Also looking forward to Jeff Immelt's autobiography.

My company already incorporate a lot of Jack's principles.

Must be because our CEO is an ex GE guy and worked directly with Welch

Very accurate observation. However, in some places, such as where I work, you're going to need skill. Sure, a nice suit and great presentation skills help, but in the end I'm responsible for my people making the numbers. It's also part of my job description to identify those people (for bonuses) and identify those that don't make the cut (for shooting). Even if I would dream of stealing others glory, I'd be laughed out of the meeting, just as I would laugh at a report trying to stick the knife into someone else. That's the difference between a company that's been around for 50+ years with their own culture and a place that won't be around in 5 years.

Joe, if you have any other management type books you can recommend I'll be thankful. Been reading a lot of those lately and also a lot of CEO autobiographies. For motivation and ideas.
